??????

Killzone is an exclusive so how exactly is it relevant to PC ports?

Kabini is way too weak to play any xbox 360/ps3 port very well (768p low 35fps avg) so a ps4 port is going to really suck

Doubt AMD will get rid of their FX line. Their apu cpu section is simply too weak to really stand alone (compared to 8350 or i5/i7).

Kaveri is probably a smaller chip (easier to manufacture) similar to how the 8350 is bigger than the a10-5800k. It can also be used for mobile as well a desktop and a greater portion of amd sales are probably from APU vs CPU only.

My appeal to killzone was because I was showing that HSA/hUMA is already being used in response to your

HSA advantage = 0 unless the application is designed to take advantage of it.

Who said you that a PS4 exclusive is relevant to PC ports? What I said about PC ports was:

I don't wait this to be maintained in first PC ports because there are not PCs with HSA/hUMA now. But once developers are familiar with the technology and use it in games they could reuse it in future PC ports when chips as kabini are ready.

The mistake is that I wrote kabini, when I did mean kaveri.

AMD will be abandoning the FX line. You can see steamroller cores will appear first in APUs this year and then in the FX line the next year. There is a rumour that the FX line will finish with Steamroller and Excavator will be only APU.

OEM PS4 :p

AHAHA i foresee many people building overclocked hackstation 4's with upgraded core hardware then the real one!

You can only build the APU so many ways from the same company. :p

its gonna be like the mac and hackintosh all over again watch.

Kaveri displayed and demoed at Computex..

IMG0041639.jpg

Kaveri qui semble tourner autour de 200-210 mm² et donc être plus petit que Trinity et Richland (246 mm²).

Wow 210mm^2, that's surprising. So we get much better performance(both ST and MT), much better iGPU - all with 17% less die area. Great news if true.

If true, it will be even more of a shame if they pass on making a 3 module version. ~36mm^2 at 28nm would be enough for at least 1 more, n'est-ce pas?

Sans aucun doute , but it would put them back to Trinity size
and the question is there a market large enough for 6C variants ?.

Why so surprising? These chips are 28nm vs 32nm, right?

Yes but they got slightly better than perfect scaling ,
a shrinked Trinity would be 189mm2 despite a 25%
smaller GPU than Kaveri , add the few mm2 for each
core enhancement and that do a pretty well density
improvement.

According to Dr. Su presentation, the "Kaveri APU will place a huge emphasis on gaming". Killzone PS4 demo is already running six threads, each one locked on one core. Therefore I wait the previously announced 6C variants and maybe a new 8C variant of kaveri for next year.

My guess is that AMD don't want ot repeat the mistakes with Bulldozer/Piledriver being released ahead of existent software: still today the immense majority of games only use about a half of the real performance of an eight core FX. Even crysis 3 is far from full loading a six core FX.

My strategy would be to release 2C and 4C variants by the end of 2013, just when the next-gen games for PS4 and Xbox One will be released as well. Then wait to next year PC ports being ready to release 6C variants.

Personally I would be very interested in a 8C Kaveri with GDDR5 dimm memory subsystem.

Either Intel will be forced to release a GT3 Core i3 or they will lower the selling price of GT2 parts. GT2 core i3 at $120-140 will not be competitive against kaveri, perhaps not even in CPU performance.
Unless AMD will sell it higher than current Richland(I highly doubt it)

FM2+ vs FM2 pictured.
Kaveri won't fit into FM2 socket, it has 2 more pins. Trinity/Richland will fit in FM2+ and boards seem to be ready.
Hardware.fr has picture of naked chip and estimates the die size to 200-210mm^2. Supposedly this is 4C variant so there is much room left for adding another module there ;). It would be around 30mm^2 max of added die area for another module with accompanying L2 cache so this is probably left out for 2014 version with DDR4 or GDDR5 support. So far Kaveri looks very promising.

so just like FM1, FM2 will be limited to a single gen of CPUs, a single die... that's a shame... at least you can use the old CPU with a new board, but that's hardly of the same value as buying a new CPU for the old board...

I hope they don't need another new socket for DDR4/GDDR5...

I predict Intel will be ahead still in raw cpu performance even in the i3 range, the Kaveri Computex demo highlighted competitive "compute" and gaming. Though there is no i3 K series and so far there have been unlocked AMD APU models in each release.

If Kaveri is 150.00 like the A10 Richland, I dont see a problem for the i3: 30.00 cheaper, very similar cpu performance, and good enough graphics for the vast majority of people that dont game.

I personally can't wait for Kaveri. I've got spare parts sitting here that need a home. Hoping for a nice Matx board and Kaveri processor to make a nice HTPC with minor gaming as well.

Hope it comes out sooner than later.

Kaveri should be sporting Steamroller cores not the jaguar cores in Kabini. It will most definitely have a dual channel memory controller.

Whether a crossfire board is overkill somewhat depends on how long after Kaveri before Steamroller FX series appears.

It's not going to happen that easily just because the ps4 is x86 based, we're still not emulating anything that the first xbox ran besides a handful of games.
