Katie Couric thinks that to play Manhunt 2, "Rather than just pushing buttons...

Mainstream TV news covers Manhunt 2

ABC.com's news section actually does have a quick rundown of video game ratings and terminology on their site for the utterly uninitiated. CBS took a different approach, however, as CBS.com features Katie Couric's Notebook. "What sets this video game apart is that the player can become physically involved in the acts of violence," Couric says. "Rather than just pushing buttons, the player actually wields a knife, an ax, a glass shard -- to stab an opponent."

Ummm, no. Don't know who writes the copy over there at that ratings powerhouse, but that's just plain wrong. Although the PS2 version would be about pushing buttons -- unless CBS has discovered some new feature -- we're currently unaware of the Wiimote's ability to shape-shift into any of those items described allowing a player to "stab an opponent." Couric then says that research shows violent games cause children to accept violence as an every day part of life. Ironically, a kid with average intelligence should be able to figure that out by watching the first segment of Katie's news broadcast every weekday evening.

I want my glass shard Wiimote attachment.

Yes, I know this is based on console games - but this is more about the mainstream media being filled with buffoons rather than about the game itself.

is it bad I see satirical news shows (colbert report, daily show) as more informative/trustworthy than the real news. Its all about sensational bullshit anymore. So much so that it makes me want to kick each and every writer/newscaster/middelaged-gulable-douchenozel in the throat.

I wouldn't call it accepting violence so much as becoming desensitized towards it. Of course, video games are not the only thing that desensitize people towards violence.

Either way, I'm pretty sure this is a perfect example of media sensationalizing the news for ratings. Nothing new.

The makers of manhunt should look into adding those features into the game, it might help sell more copies. Put something like this on the enhanced boxes: *Now with knife wielding action!*

As for desensitization or making children more violent - the game manhunt is not designed for people under whatever age the ESRB gave it (IIRC, it was MA (17+)). Anyone that reaches the age of the rating and can't tell the difference between a game and real life has more problems than just a video game.

It's been proven that kids who watched The Three Stooges regularly hit each other on the head with hammers and dumbells. I think a few people even tried to jump off of skyscrapers. Really damn dangerous show. It taught children to think in black and white, too. :p

Reminds me of:

"Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music."

Ya, news people dont really get it. My local news said it was unsuitable for kids to play. Maybe thats why it was given a M rating which also corresponds to the over 17 crowd.

Though it would be sick if an older person bought this for a/their kid.

QFT

She probably does stupid stories like this in a vain attempt to boost her sagging ratings.

I'm wondering if she even bothers personally fact-checking anything they thrust in front of her face to read. If not, that's pretty sad. It's her credibility on the line... you'd think she's take an interest in the veracity of her statements.

I've been desensitized to media stupidity, ignorance, and willfully misleading stories.

I love how whenever a violent game comes out all of these anti-video game people come out from the woodwork to stand on their cardboard boxes and preach a bunch of crap. Then the game quickly becomes old news and they go back into hiding until the next violent title is released.

I've been desensitized to the words "Katie Couric" and "thinks" appearing in the same sentence.
