This just came to my head and I found the answer:

Man, if I was a Brit, I'd be fucking pissed as hell. It's 2011 people. Blood should be shed.

The royal family owns tons of land and COULD rent it for craploads of money, making more than they do.

Imagine if someone owned all of Manhattan, Washington DC, and several thousand acres in Texas. How much rent would they be able to charge?

It's about $1 per person per year. You're paying way more than that today for GM & Banks that couldn't fail. Think about it.

Are you from the UK? If so, a quick question if you do not mind: Does someone from say Wales, have a different accent than one from London? I guess what I am curious about is how many regional accents there are in England/Wales, broadly speaking of course.

How was this land acquired? If it is leftover from the feudal/noble days, I imagine it would be a political disaster to rent it. *shrug*

From what I have been told by my English friends (who are married and have completely different accents), every town/city is different in its dialect and pronunciation...ie accent.

Where do royals get their money? I mean, WTF do they do?

Let me guess, tax payers?

Not really. I lived there for a while. The crown owns most of the real estate there, the r/e is held in trusts that they own.

Look at most all real estate adds, when you 'buy' a house it's not like it is here, you're actually buying a long term lease there and don't own sh1t.

They have staggering amounts of wealth.

Yup, pretty much true.

Heck just within London there are numerous accents.

Well, if this is true.. that explains a lot.

No wonder they don't value private property.

Edit: LOL, whoops. I read through the thread and forgot it was locked.
