So i've been having the Kaspersky/Vista internet slowdown using 6.0 that many others have experienced...

Last night I tried installing 7.0 and it worked, except it wouldnt accept my activation key, something about it not being valid (i had issues when i bought it via digital download from newegg originally and they send me another one that worked until now).

So i log into kaspersky's site, get assigned a customer ID, and submit my problem, get e-mail confirmation of my support request, etc...

I log in 7-8 hours later, and my request is gone, no response, just gone from the system.

I type the support request again, get another confirmation email, log in, see the request and wait for a response. When i get back from work I log in again, support request is gone, no response.

WTF

So i reinstalled 6.0, and now it says my license is invalid for that one as well. lovely. the license is only about 7-8 months old, 2nd one i purchased.

I have never had good luck trying to get much help from Kasperksy. Even my requests to create a forum account have gone unanswered.

Have you posted about it on their forums? mech has a thread up there about the slowdown.

Well my bigger problem at the moment is that my license is now invalid, not the slowdown.

Still no response, this is horrid support.

Tried calling, they only know about selling products, not support.

Almost a week now and still no response, amazing. Now even my mom is having problems with her Kaspersky, won't let her copy any files from external drives, even when kaspersky is paused. We have to physically exit the program to let it work at all.

Honestly, somehow this program went to crap. It used to be fantastic, now it seems its nothing but a waste of money.

Uninstalling now, gonna try Nod32 trial and if its good, they get my hard earned money, not these crappy people at Kaspersky.

Why settle for mediocre when you can get the best for less. :p

http://www.avira.com/en/products/personal.html

Avira PE Premium is a mere $63 for 3 years and only uses 10MB of ram. You can use the classic version for free that shares the same virus/trojan/worm detection rate. However it lacks pop3 scanning, spy/adware detection, and has a slower update server. You can disable the pop nag screen in the free version by following these directions.

IIRC, the premium offers 64-bit support as well (for anyone that is interested). AntiVir's detection rate is superior to NOD32, see the antivirus detection rate thread.

interesting, i used AntiVir back in the day but stopped when they updated their software and their update server went down for about a week (2 years or so ago now).

Since i only use IMAP, would i be fine with the free version?

ok, very much not impressed with AntiVir at all, seems to be way too user unfriendly for Vista... So far i've yet to get it to update (hell, i can't even download the manual update as the servers seem down, same thing i was going through two years ago). Found a manual update on the forums, in the program i click manual update, and it says I need Admin Rights, but won't elevate me like all other programs can. WTF.

so im browsing through the forums, and the staff there recommends to add about 8 files to the firewall & turn off windows defender. What good is this antivirus if you need to disable a security feature?

1) Windows Defender is useless and has a piss-poor detection rate. Some AV's in Vista disable it (Norton comes to mind).
2) AntiVir free has update issues but the Premium does not (afaik). I installed the freeware version on a pc at the office today that refused to update, but the premium version on my workstation updates like a champ. Conspiracy? :p

I feel your pain though because I was highly annoyed that the free version was having update issues.

Just let the autoupdate do its thing or buy the premium edition and get access to the fast server (part of the premium package). Manual updates on the free version of AntiVir suck (they have to give you some kind of motivation for buying it).

I run AntiVir (on my vista x32 notebook) in expert mode when configuring it, fairly straightforward. It is no Norton 360 in terms of ease of use. Its UI did undergo a major revamp a few years back when they switched to the new version (added autoupdates, improved scheduling for autoscans, etc.)

That was the reason i dumped it 2 or so years ago, kinda surprised they are having the same problems this much later. The forum is riddled with people who cant update, hell, i cant even ping the serverthe updates are on: avgate.net

But mine is saying that it cant even see the update server, how will autoupdate work? Is it a different server?

so its working now, guess the servers were down for awhile?

I have to say, my system feels noticably faster with AntiVir than with Kaspersky... It just seem to need to "think" as much as it used to...

Thanks for the help everybody! I may just stick with AntiVir as i've STILL yet to hear back from Kaspersky
