Kaspersky getting more and more bloated?

For the longest time I was told Kaspersky was king. Well, not that long. Since about 2006 I switched over with ver 6. Then Ver 7 came out. I refused to upgrade on my laptop, but my desktop which was a dual core Opteron handled it with no problem.

My single core Dothan laptop seems to get slower with KAV Ver 7. About last week I bit the bullet and went with KIS 2009 (upgraded from KAV 7). Terrible. My system felt like it was CRAWLING.

Is it me or is this program just getting more bloated?

I test drove Nod32 on my MBP (uninstalling KIS2009) and VMWare Fusion felt 20x faster and more responsive, especially in the bootup.

I'm going to test drive Nod on my old Dothan 1.8ghz Dell lappy because it really cannot handle Kaspersky that well.

If you have an open mind :D I suggest trying a trial of the Norton 2009 line in my limited testing it now has the lightest footprint of any thing I have tried. I notice no slowdowns at all, it is looking good at av-comparatives as well. It now also installs very fast under 2 min in all the cases I have seen usually under 1 and if it is not your cup of tea it uninstalls cleaner as well. JMHO

I have KAV2009 installed on a 1GHz Duron with 512MB of RAM and an old 15k SCSI drive. There's some performance loss, but it's adequate for what we use it for.

Software is like a new truck. NOBODY wants to hear that the new truck model is smaller and lighter than last year's model. So they get bigger and bigger and heavier and heavier. Until nobody can afford to buy them and to buy gasoline for them.

Yeah it gets decent reviews, but after going through SystemWorks 2004 - 2006, I've been scarred =).

In any case, I'll probably take a look at NAV2009 and hopefully it's better.

KIS/KAV2009 run perfectly fine on my Opteron 170 rig and so I get it's perfectly fine for most people, but for older systems, it does suck to have to deal with such a performance hit.

Yup, I was in the same boat. No more effing Norton. But....my Bitdefender internet security subscription was running out and I wasn't too happy with the speed (especially slow boot up time) so after reading the accolades for Norton I gave the trial a shot for a couple of weeks. They sure did clean up their act. The Internet Security package even comes with a meter to show you the resources it's drawing....and it ain't much. It's fast and sleek so I've licensed it.

Try ESET Nod32, it's written in assembly, fastest and lightest AV evar! (Well, it might not be THE lightest, but it is light, but it does have the fastest file scanning you can buy, as well as a near perfect detection rate and heuristic based protection)

For all the bad mouthing of kaspersky, in many ways, its perhaps the best AV on the planet. Especially in terms of getting rapid updates out for new threats. Sadly, in terms of market share, it anything but proves the contention that if you build a better mouse trap, people will beat a path to your door.

Instead, decidedly inferior AV with better marketing have the lions share of the world AV market, in terms of NOD32, its also a very good AV, with a small segment of the AV market.

Don't take my word for it, read the various AV detection rates tests.

I personally like Kaspersky but as the OP stated it is really slow and bloated.. Especially when I was doing a scan.. It has an awesome detection rate but I couldn't see myself putting it on all my client laptops with that kind of a foot print. I went with ESET NOD32, and I have been happy aside from one problem I had which was an 10D10T error on my behalf.. It plays very nice on my Servers running Windows 2008 Server, and my desktops which are mainly Windows 2000, and XP right now..
