How long does it take from the time you log in until kaspersky is up and running?

It takes a friggin long time for mine, maybe a minute or more.

Yeah mine is just a few seconds, never a minute or more. Sounds more like something Norton would do, hehehe.

Few seconds here also, Kaspersky should be one of the first things that actually launches on windows start-up (with good reason). Do you have something like ATI control panel that's eating up processor usage before Kaspersky can start? You really need to check msconfig and your start-up services to see what is actually launching before making a call on whether it's Kaspersky or something else.

well apparently it is something else that is loading that is delaying it. disabled everything except kaspersky, some nvidia dll file, and ctfmon (al of wjhich actually re-enabled themselves at startup).

kaspersky loaded right away...

so now i gotta figure out what is causing it...

ok, i turned on the onboard sound volume control, my creative volume control, and the logitech mouse control.

kaspersky took forever to load up again.

disabled logitech control, rebooted. still slow.
turned that back on and disabled the creative volume control. rebooted. still slow.
turned creative back on and turned off the onboard sound. rebooted. still slow.

actually, its a little faster now, but not as fast as it was with everything off.

i don't get it. i guess i'll post my test on the kaspersly forums and see what they have to say.

You could also have a look at XP bootvis, it'll provide you with timings if each thing that's launched when you start up so you can quickly identify what is causing the delay. It could be something like a badly written driver waiting on a request for too long.

i did get bootvis and i ran the optimize thing in it and rebooted. everything came up fast but when i rebooted again, it came up slow.

i also did the trace thing and i'm not sure how to decypher it. also, only a few of my programs showed up on the list, not all of them.

Only takes a few seconds for me, do you have a start-up scan option running on start-up ?

mechBgon taught me how to kill ctfmon in Windows XP but searching for his explanation fails to find it.

You can't kill it from msconfig.

As I recall you go Start/Control Panel/Regional and Language Options/Languages tab/Details button/Advanced tab/clear the checkmark from "Turn off advanced text services."

That should kill ctfmon from running as a constant service. If that doesn't do it for you then ask mechBgon . He knows exactly how to do it.
