Coming up with a chess program to beat Kasparov mercilessly just isn't fun anymore. I say we put more research into writing a chess program that will make him cry while beating him mercilessly.

I think Kasparov is playing amazingly well against Deep W. Blue (aka Deep Junior). Keep in mind that humans get fatigued and make mistakes, while computers don't get tired.
 
he was never beaten mercilessly. I think in the end, there's a limit to how much computing cycles help, where being able to calculate 4 billion and 5 billion moves ahead doesn't make a difference when the computer is going to do the same thing anyways. With that said, there are certain symmetric positions (eg. the 'rhino position') that still leaves computers with absolutely no countermoves to base the calculations on.
