Ok, I read the thread and I would like to suggest Krav Maga to you. I am 28/m and I am finishing my first class.

Great workout, and excellent (I feel better than karate) in self defense

Thanks for the suggestion, i see its a self defense system of the Israeli Defence Forces taught to law enforcement in the U.S

I just like to point out another reason i wanted to join some kind of defence class was to also be more flexible and have some basic skills since i'm trying to become a police officer also.

My teacher is a Police Officer (and trains the local PD here) I would imagine that Krav Maga would look good on your resume, and you might call around to see if any of your local PD officers teach it. (good contacts)

How about monkey style?

Or drunken boxing?

They arent really styles.
More ways of moving.
Drunken empahsizes striking from off balance stances.

Edit: have trained BJJ and Muay thai for 2 and 4 years respectively

I didn't say "what" about them. I said "How" about them. As in suggesting them.

They both seem really fun and would definitely get someone in shape.

Gotcha. It seems that you'd have to be a breakdancer to be able to effectively use either one. lol

Oh, and this might not be a concern since he's in NYC, but you also have to consider the availability of certain styles in your area as well - doesn't do him much good to recommend something like Shaolin White Crane or Kyokyushin-Kai if they don't teach the style around his area.

yes all the names recommend none show up on yahoo yellow pages, the most common i seen here in long island, NY is Karate and Tae kwon Do.

Edit: i did find a Krav Maga two towns over. one thing, my original reason to find a place is for fitness, confidence... not to learn how to beat the crap out of someone in street fights.

So . . drunken boxing isn't a style? From what part of your ass did you pull that out of?

edit: wikipedia begs to differ

Oh, and yes, it is a way of moving, but what martial art isn't?

If you want to take a practical style that you can actually use on the street, find a studio that teaches Thai Boxing. I've been taking it for a while now, and after taking years of Tae Kwon Do, it's MUCH more practical. You shouldn't give a damn about forms and all the other impractical crap. Knowing that won't help you on the street. Your goal is the crush in the other guy's face if you're attacked on the street. Throwing high kicks and crap you learn in TKD will just get you killed, if you're just starting out.

So, my advice, take something practical, like Thai Boxing or Jiu Jitsu. Stay away from traditional styles like karate and Tae Kwon Do.

I agree. I took Shotokan karate for 7 years and feel its not very practical as a fighting form. You are much better off with Ju Jitsu or Brazilian Ju Jitsu. I took BJJ for 3 months and saw it very practical from a self defense standpoint. Unfortunately, my situation changed so I was unable to continue but would again if I got the chance.

On a side note, now that I learned a few moves in BJJ, I keep thinking about that scene from Saving Private Ryan where the Nazi guy stabs the Jewish guy in the heart. If he had known BJJ, he could have gotten out of that situation 😉
Yeah dude, it was a very sad scene. That was an easy arm bar waiting to happen. 😉

Scroll down -

read:

"The routines used are often new, modernized recompilations of traditional styles"

Zuijiuquan (???) - Drunken Fist
Houquan (??) - Monkey Fist

Maybe you worked a little bit too much on chokes? Why don't you relax a bit and let some blood to your brain.

True I have been choked out once to many times....<goes black>.....<wakes up..passes guard automaically>
But lets be honest .In martial arts every damn thing has its own style .If you let your johnson hang to the left and incoporate some aikido you can claim to have a uniqe stlye.I personally have never seen a Drunken Fist school or practioner for that matter. But what I have seen is numerous people incorporate the Drunken Boxing style into their own art.Thats what I was getting out but didnt want to type this much.

Riiight. Nevermind the fact that there IS an established style of both monkey style and drunken style.

But then again, I suppose it's my fault for expecting people to know what they're talking about, pertaining to martial arts, on a computer geek forum.
