blackinches would like to know if anybody has any experience with the karajan audio used on dfi boards, and if they are any good.

All I could find at DFI's website was this:

Karajan audio module

- Realtek ALC850 8-channel audio CODEC
- 6 audio jacks
- 1 CD-in connector
- 1 front audio connector
- S/PDIF-in/out interface

A good rule of thumb is to not expect anything more than adequate out of Realtek codecs.

so it just uses a realtek codec. bummer. guess the only difference is that it has a detachable card with all the inputs and outputs on it.

It's strange, because from what I could find, the Intel boards use an Azalia audio codec for their version of Karajan. Azalia should be pretty decent as far as onboard codecs goes. I don't know why DFI dropped it for their AMD line.

Your best bet for cheap, decent sound would be the Chaintech AV-710. From my own personal experience, it is FAR better in ALL areas in comparison with onboard Realtek.

why so bitter?

looks like blackinches will have to get a sound card then. too bad the dfi doesn't come with an sb live like the msi sli board.

I've found that the DFI audio isn't bad at all. After dicking around with the levels on the equalizer and such it is sounding pretty good. Sounds clean in movies and has a good overall sound reproduction range. I would say it produces mids better than the Audigy I had in my old computer, but the highs aren't quite as sharp.
