Maybe. I haven't tried it before, but I think it's possible to change a BIOS option so that it boots from an external HDD instead of internal HDD. I'm not sure if your laptop will have this option though.

Agreed with Fish, things will be a little sluggish under usb. Firewire or Esata would be your friend....but not sure if you can boot from that.

Honestly, with how cheap drives are nowadays, bite the bullet and get a new HDD. Hell, go lurk on the hot deals/FSFT forums and find something there.
