Kaplan University

I'm currently attending a State University. Recently, they cut all night classes. I'm a full-time employee, wife, and mother. I've thought about going to an accredited online university like Kaplan or University of Phoenix. Any suggestions?

Several "real life" universities offer online only programs. I think you'd get a lot more credibility with a degree from them.

some brick and mortar universities offer online degrees as well, look into that

/i know some university of california schools do

UoP is still accredited

check your state university and other schools for the degree you want. I don't think Kaplan is accredited.

Value of UoP is like any other degree from a school that doesn't have national recognition

I've actually looked into UoP and I'm still thinking it's the best option.

Anyone have any comments (careerwise) on UoP? Especially for professional students.

i go there

don't expect a harvard level education, but it's not a joke either. The teachers are all working pro's with at least a masters in their field. My last teacher was a lawyer, my current teacher is a financial analyst for Lockheed that determines the price to charge the government for a contract.

career wise it's like any other degree that is not from a name brand school. Some employers will throw it in the trash, others will give you an interview. This subject comes up in the UoP newsgroups and in december people posted a bunch of fortune 500 companies that take the degree. One of the biggest businesses of UoP is corporate deals with big companies to send their people to school, so they wouldn't be paying for the degree if their didn't like the school.

As far as students, I've had a range of people in my classes. Business owners, managers, worker bees, you name it. I've worked with someone in a few classes that managed a bunch of marriott hotels in the south east.

the school is accredited by the higher learning commission of the north central association. it's just a generic regional accrediting body that accredits a bunch of schools, including ivy league schools. Some programs like nursing are also accredited by special industry bodies. The business program is not AACSB accredited, but the curriculum is the same.

i'm getting a finance degree and will most likely go to law school afterwards

my biggest problem is scheduling. i work until 6pm and that makes it very hard to go to school. UoP is a full time credit load and I will be done with my degree three years after starting it. This includes 5 CLEPS and credit for military experience. I have until february 2006 until i finish. if i go to night school i will be going part time and will be 40 by the time I finish. This way I can have a masters or JD before I'm 40. I also looked at online programs from SUNY and other state schools, but they didn't have a good choice of degrees.

I work as a windows/exchange admin so even if I don't get a masters, I'm betting I can use my experience and degree to move into working with financial software. You have to look at your experience and situation. The alumni magazine has business degree grads getting some nice jobs, but I don't know how good of a sample that is.

i'm currently a manager/supervisor with non-profit company (for the past 7 years) and i'm trying to diversify myself. i was working towards business degree at my state university, but ran into the same problem you had. Too little time at night, not enough classes offered, and too long to finish.

I was thinking about getting a paralegal degree... since you stated that thing about business degree not being accredited.

honestly, my husband's the breadwinner, i'm just looking for something with a little more pay and prestige.

I would still check other options to be sure it is the best choice for you. It's a major $$$ investment.

that is something i thought about butactually, the money i'd spend at my state uni. would equal out to the same at UoP

AACSB has 494 schools that it accredited. There are a lot more business schools in the US. I would check www.aacsb.edu for their list of schools. If you have a good resume the school name on your degree isn't that big a deal as your experience.

I enrolled in University of Phoenix, and I have to say it's amazing. Everything is very organized, classes are structured and very participatory. It's worth every penny! Not to mention all online and faster!
