Kansas - a nice place to live? edit: And work?

Is Kansas a nice place? Anybody live there that can explain how their area is? I'm not as familiar with the inland states since I've always been on the West and East coast. I know there are some redneck backwards states I need to avoid, but I don't think anybody has said anything bad about Kansas. In fact I came across a thread where the guy said moving to Kansas from California was best thing they ever did.

I have lived in Kansas all my life (22), but I have also traveled around the country so I know it compares and contrasts to other states. Depending on what part you live in (western, south central, south east, northeast) it can be very different. Western Kansas has nothing in it except fields and tiny cities. I think the biggest city there is Dodge City, but im not sure. South Central is Wichita and surrounding areas. Southeast is also pretty desolate, and Northeast has Topeka (capital city, where I live), Manhattan (KSU, college town), Lawrence (KU, college town), and Kansas City. As far as comparing to the east coast..the roads are very nice here, they are logically laid out and well kept, and traffic is very low. Its very quiet at night..so if you are used to noise when you sleep..you might have a hard time sleeping! Its not too redneck if you move to a bigger city, but its still pretty redneck. Its not "backwards" per say..but here are a few instances of how I think this state is redneck:

Teaching the theory of evolution is banned in all schools in Kansas. This was implemented a few years back (when we had a republican governer). Now we have a democratic office..and they are looking into changing this again.

The only place to get any kind of culture (indie music/films, exotic foods, festivals, live stuff..etc..) is Lawrence and Kansas City. There are actually movies here that we don't pick up because they may be "controversial" or something..like Topeka never got "monsters ball". Had to go to Lawrence to see it.

Topeka has a redneck radio station with this guy named "radio rich" or something. I think he controls at least 60 percent of the population of Topeka with his rantings. For instance..he tells people to stop listening to the Dixie Chicks..etc etc. We also have Fred Phelps, a baptist minister who pickets the streets everday with signs that discourage homosexuality...

If you are moving to Kansas, and want peace and quiet, move to Western or Southeast Kansas. If you want to be close to it all, move closer to Lawrence and Kansas City. If you want to live near a fellow AT'er, move to Topeka! But..I don't recommend Topeka. Its pretty bad.

Any questions?

Edit: you know your state sucks when even the guy from Iowa's ripping on it.

I live in Wichita, KS. While certainly not a huge metropolis, it does have a population around 500k and quickly growing, and is far from the desolate place that many people stereotype it to be. (Probably many in this thread.) It is true that western Kansas is flat and sparsely populated, though I don't see the whole of Colorado being knocked for the eastern part of that state. Some will also say it's boring, but we have the same stuff to do here as most any other city.
The cost of living is one of the best, and due to many large companies with headquarters here, as well as many smaller startups, there is a pretty good job pool.

I'd could go on, but if you have further questions, drop me a PM and I'll be happy to help out.

What's the old joke? The best thing to come out of Iowa is I-35, or something like that?

I actually live about 10 minutes from Kinnick stadium...home of the Hawkeyes in Iowa City. So my little part of Iowa is actually bit different than the rest of the state. College town + medical mecca rivaling Mayo in abilities makes for a bit of an exciting place to live.

Oh yea..Kansas does have good sports. K-State for Football (top 10 in all polls), and KU for Basketball (Final Four 2 years in a row, made it to the finals last year). KC Chiefs will good this year..and Royals are in first place in their division (for who knows how long.) If you care about sports....

Sorry, I just have a deep hatred for Wichita. The many times ive been there, it just reminds me of a bigger version of Topeka. No offense to anyone who lives there, etc etc.

More going for it than Manhattan, agreed. Lawrence..no way. Largest city in the state? Well..maybe technically, but KC is bigger. Overland Park alone will be bigger than Wichita in no time.

No offense taken, but from the many times I've been to Topeka, I find the two cities quite different....guess you'd have to live here.

btw k-state is wayyyyy over-rated
what kind of non conf schedule do they play???
this is year is light even by k-state standards
Umass has a Div 1 football team? troy state? mc neese state?
k-state might win the north but only to get trounced in the championship by the sooners.
sorry.
and arrowhead and kaufman stadiums are both in missouri

Its pretty weird. The papers , and news stations in Topeka never mention anything about anything happening in Wichita. Its like it doesn't exist to Topekans. Creepy...

both in MO, but only an hour and and a half away from Topeka, KS. Also the name of the city is "KANSAS city"...K-state plays cal (decent) and Marshall (decent). Non-conf doesn't mean much when you play Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma State, Nebraska in the regular season...They should win the North but OU will be very tough in the championship.

every non conf game is a home game too, how did they pull that off
well cal isnt but its in missouri.
wait im sorry...KANSAS city, MO.

I don't mind this... but I definitely want my kids to understand the theory of evolution, as well as creation, and even other religion creation stories. To completely ban it is absurd...

A lot of talk radio hosts told listeners to boycott Dixie Chicks - and I agree with them. Picketing the streets against gays is donwright moronic though - if you're going to do that, then you have to picket every other 1 of a million sins - and the fact he's picketing indicates he's a pretty great sinner and hypocrite himself.

I would want to live near one of the cities for a tech job, but be able to afford some really nice property secluded somewhere.

Well here is what you can use as a baseline of where I'm living now - I'm in Pennsylvania, live in Williamsport, and my company's biggest offices are in Wilkes-Barre and Philadelphia.

You'd probably want to live near Wichita then, there are quite a few smaller towns around it that have a low cost of living. I'm not sure on the job market, but its a big city so i'm sure there should be something. A really nice town just outside of KC is Shawnee. Not exactly secluded, but far enough to avoid major traffic, and close enough to be 10-15 minutes away from it all.
