I emailed the ACLU about this. They reclined to take the case.
:colbert:

If corporations, fictional entities, can be persons under the law, why not orcas?
Once orcas can form a SuperPAC and corrupt our government too, then maybe they'll have a case.;)
:\

It certainly is an interesting and convenient situation we've got here on this planet, having such a massive intelligence gap between us and any other species, or at least a communications gap.
"Not as smart as us? Sorry, you don't matter as much. Well, mostly. In some situations. It's complicated.
Um...look, we really like bacon and dancing cetaceans, dammit!"

Get ready for the petition to legalize animal/human marriages.

Let's say you get a dog, and you put it in a 2x2 cage in the garage, period. You clean the cage, you provide food and water, and that's it.

No running around, etc.

Now, don't most people understand that's terrible animal cruelty? And yet are there any laws against it?

Animals in captivity for human entertainment can be terribly treated, even if fed etc.

I think these are real issues to look at. Some people understand that, others only notice the legal problem of 'treating animals like people with rights'.

Who's to say this isn't simply for publicizing the issue - which it did, see this thread?

They may well just be 'making the point' that the animals suffer some of the things slaves did - so that laws are needed. Yes, I'm a Californian.

Thought that was already legal in Kali?

There are laws, animal abuse laws. However, there is a distinct limit on this, and to claim orcas have anything close to the rights of humans is ridiculous. Might as well charge them for murder of dolphins then, after all, they have the same rights of people too!

Yea, Jeff7 it is quite silly the arbitrariness in which we assign value to other forms of life right?

If you want to start granting rights to animals, then they have to be treated equally. That means I want every animal defecating in public arrested and put in jail or at least fined. Oh wait they can't pay fines, so I guess they'll get locked up huh? How about when another animal kills another animal? Murder charges? How do we design a jury for them? Can Humans sit on the jury? I mean we're all peers right? It is retarded to assign any human quality or identity to an animal. Similar, ok, but same? lol

Suppose you have sex with a dog that is 5 years old. Do you get charged with child molestation? It's a 5 year old ffs.

It would be wonderful if the court decided, "no, it's not slavery. AND, I order PETA to pay SeaWorld for all their lawyer expenses in this case."
