Site does not go past the year 2000, like nobody owns a vehicle that was made in the 1990s?

Regardless of the commifornia says, some manufacturers require the oil to be changed within a certain time period, or your warranty is voided.

One guy I used to work with, he bought a new ford diesel truck. The dealer told him he had to save the receipt and mileage from every oil change, or the warranty would be voided on the motor.

My CR-V has an oil indication % Life. I always change at 50%, which is usually between 6500-7500 miles when thought of that way...

That is exactly what the state is trying to get people to do; follow the manufacturers recommendations.

My 2007 Honday Civic Hybrid has an oil change life indicator. It hits 0% at 3,000 miles. I usually don't change it until over 5,000, however.

It shouldn't be necessary. Although, given that your car is used infrequently (one of the definitions of "severe" usage), it would be reasonable to use the "severe" schedule of changes.

The point of this is that disposal of used engine oil is expensive and potentially environmentally hazardous if done incorrectly. By changing oil less frequently less of the toxic used oil is produced. Used engine oil is contaminated with heavy metals, ground from the engine parts, and full of carcinogenic and toxic combustion products, and heat-degraded oil products (e.g. polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which are very nasty).

One thing that is interesting is that the car manufacturers do pander to the local perception - which in the US is that oil should be changed frequently (but elsewhere, such as in Asia and Europe such a perception isn't present). There are a number of examples of a car manufacturer recommending 6k oil changes in the US, and 12k oil changes in Europe for the exact same model/year of car, while recommending exactly the same grade of oil.

I do every 12-15k on synthetic. Went a bit early this time around though because of winter coming up and I prefer to have a smooth running engine for the winter.

up to 10,000 miles? wtf...I was thinking 5,000 was more appropriate.

Depends on the car, of course, but 7500 (or once per year if under) is not unusual.
However under extreme driving conditions (towing, frequent idling, driving like an idiot etc.) 3,000 is often the recommendation.

Heard a rumor that the state will mandate alternators made of beef. Supposed to be more environmentally friendly.

Word goes that Jiffy Lube started the whole 3000 mile oil change thing to try getting people to change their car's oil more often (and thus make more money off them).

wait a little longer...and your camry will die...

in any case what people believe and what they do is another thing... i' sure many wait too long to change their oil more than anything else.

plus if you make this harder or more expensive for people, that will only lead to dumping and other things that will undermine your goal.
