Kaiseki

Kaiseki

This is my new favorite way to eat. We went to Sugiyama last night after a show. Man it was delicious. We went with the 8 course meal, here's what we had, what I can remember...

8 Course Modern Kaiseki
Sakizuke: Seasonal appetizer -- whitefish tofu in ponzu
Zensai: Delicate arrangement of seasonal Japanese fish and vegetable -- shrimp, whole baby crab (crunchy!), steamed seaweed, grilled pepper, bay berry in gelatin
Tukuri: Assorted sashimi -- tuna, squid, snapper, yellowtail, toro, kumamoto oyster topped with uni.
Suimono: Seasonal clear soup -- with egg custard and whitefish
Ishiyaki: Choice of tenderloin or seafood served on hot stone -- I had the beef with mushrooms, gf had tuna, shrimp and whitefish
Oshinogi: Oshisushi -- shrimp, unagi, and something else I don't recall
Nimono: Seasonal vegetables cooked in light sauce -- oddly, I don't remember this course? 😕
Shokuji: Home made rice with various vegetables, miso soup, and Japanese pickles
Dessert: Grape fruit wine jelly with cream

Man, it was so good, I can't wait to go back. Anyone know of any other good kaiseki style restaurants in NYC?

Sounds really good!

Next time take pics...Nah, don't do that...Will make everyone hungry...

I wish I had taken pics, everything was so beautiful. I'd feel like a dork whipping out a camera at dinner though.

Also, I had a couple things I'd never had before. One was a wrinkly green pepper that tasted like a jalapeno with no/very little heat. The other was in my clear soup. At first, I thought they were beansprouts, but they weren't very crunchy. A closer look revealed a pair of undeveloped eyes on each! :Q Anyone know what the pepper is called and any clue what kind of embryos/baby fish I was eating?
