K8NXP-SLI and SATA DVD-RW

Have been running a K8NXP-SLI just fine with a SATA HDD boot drive. Installed WinXP with a conventional IDE CD-RW.

Then just bought a new Plextor SATA DVD-RW, and removed the IDE CD-RW. BIOS sees the DVD drive, but the system hangs during the Windows XP splash screen. When I disconnect the SATA DVD-RW again, everything is fine.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Have you flashed the Plextor drive to the new firmware? You can get it here...

http://www.plextor.com/english/support/downloads/firm_716.htm

I seem to recall it fixing a similiar issue that the ASUS A8N-SLI users had with that drive. I decided to go with the IDE version of that drive because I read the issues that the ASUS folks were having. That and I wanted to save my SATA's for HD's.

Also did you turn off the RAID functionality on the controller where the SATA Plextor is connected to? Not sure if that would cause a problem or not but you might want to check.

thanks darkfiber. RAID is definitely disabled in the BIOS, and since it hangs trying to boot into windows, I don't think I can easily upgrade the firmware.

I'll have to try putting the drive into another box to upgrade the firmware, I guess...

It's wierd that the BIOS recognizes the drive no problem, but still won't complete booting...

Well, after putting off dealing with this for a long time, I got the DVD (Plextor 712SA) to work in another system, a 8IPE1000Pro, and updated the firmware.

No help.

To give more info, i have a hdd in the yellow sata plug, works fine as a boot device. If I connect the DVD to the same bank of yellow sata plugs, BIOS sees the drive, but it hangs at the windows splash screen

If i plug into the orange sata plugs (Nforce I believe) the bios never sees the drive.

I have installed the nforce raid drivers, which caused me to reinstall windows entirely. I have to say that Gigabyte tech support is almost shockingly useless here.

Can anyone give me a suggestion?

I have all RAID disabled in BIOS.
