my case has 2 front usb ports. according to the mobo manual, the front usb and 2 rear usb ports are shared.

what would happen if i plugged 2 devices in the rear port (ie: scanner, printer) and 2 devices in the front port (usb wireless adapter, memory key)?

I have a couple of K7VTA3s but I never knew that the USB ports were shared... is it possible that the manual means that the IRQs are shared? I don't know if I'll ever use all four ports at once, but if you do, please let me know what happens!

They aren't. The only shared USB port is the connector for the internal flash card reader ECS bundles with some of their boards; the additional USB headers for front panel usage are independent from the rear ports.

so why does the manual say front and 2 of the rear usb are shared? (k7vta3 does not come w/internal flash reader)

Peter's right... I have the manual in front of me, and it says that "The USBCR1 is shared with one of the USB ports of the I/O back panel" and then it shows an illustration of the *one* USB port that is shared (bottom left port). I don't know why you keep insisting that the manual says the front ports and 2 of the rear USBs are shared. The manual clearly states that the header labeled USB3 is for the front panel, and USBCR1 (the shared port) is for a USB Card Reader. Take a look at page 20 of the manual.
