Take out the sound card and see if you can enter BIOS. In BIOS make sure you disable ALL instances of sound, gameport, midi whatever - I mean everything.
Go into WIn2K and remove all sound related stuff (uninstall everything related to sound).
Reboot again and see if it still installs onboard sound - if it does you still did not disable onboard sound properly - check again. Reboot again and check (sorry you have to learn to do this)
If OK then install that monster SBLive and see if OK.
My SBLive is installed in PCI 3 or PCI 4 can't remember now - but try PCI 4 first and then 3 if it does not work
Thanks for the advice... I did all of those things the other night.... The trouble was that I couldn't enter the BIOS at all... card in or out.
So last night I reset the CMOS through the onboard jumper setting and I could get into the BIOS again. For some strange reason the onboard sound had enabled itself again!!?!! So I disabled it again and started Windows, it detected my sound card and all was well once again. The only thing now is that my remote centre isn't working. The SoundBlaster site has no information about trouble shooting this problem...
I am very happy with the AMD processor. This is my first AMD machine! I build them for others, but personally I have always used Intel CPU's. I have to say that I am very impressed with the Athlon XP1800+ They have outdone themselves!
So now my home network has 4 machines on it permanently!
1 x Intel Pentium 2 266Mhz
1 x Intel Pentium 3 733Mhz
1 x AMD Athlon XP1600+
1 x AMD Athlon XP1800+
All working on cable internet via my router and 8 port 10/100 NWay switching hub. I love it! Now all I would like to get in a nice laptop so I can hook it up wireless and sit in the garden in the sun while working or surfing the internet! But that is later next year. I am also going to get one more machine for the home network... I know one thing is for sure, and that is that the new machine will have an AMD processor in it. 😉
