K7t Turbo-R and Athlon XP1700 doesn't run smoothly

I have successfully updated my bios and installed the XP1700 chip. I'm not overclocking, just running the chip at default. I have noticed that it does not run nearly as smoothe as when I had my t-bird 1 gig, even when I oc'd it at 1266. When I unrar or un ace files, the machine will pause/freeze for 10-20 seconds then continue. Anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this?

Original question:

I have not updated my bios yet, so they are stock 2.2. I put in an Athlon XP1700 to see if it would pick up, and I got 4 red LED's indicating a CPU problem. Is this because of the old bios, or really a CPU problem? I know I should update my bios, but I haven't been able to do it successfully yet. When I boot the bios disk, it get's stuck at the "don't shut down or reboot your computer" screen. I've left it for over an hour with no further progress, and I know it's not rewriting the bios and failing as the machine will reboot fine after I power it down. It was suggested that I try to upgrade incrementally instead of going directly to the latest 3.2? so I attempted to go to 2.5, but have the same problem. Any ideas? The autoexec is going through the process for me when I try now. Should I delete teh autoexec and try manually? Will it make a difference? The only bios available do not specify Turbo Raid, so I don't believe that to be a problem. Thanks for any input!

I got the new Bios loaded and the 1700+ is running! I searched the archives becasue I remember that some people had trouble loading bios on teh raid board and had an extra parameter to add to the execution string. I couldn't find that but did see that some people had to do it from the HD as opposed to floppy, and that worked!
