K7T Pro2-A + SB Live! = High pitched hang in games

Hey guys, I've had this motherboard for a while now, probably about 4 days. At first I tried to install Windows 98SE but it would freeze on me constantly. Now, I have Windows 2000 installed with the latest VIA drivers, and Soltek UDMA/100 drivers. I don't have SP1 installed - whenever I play Counterstrike, or even Quake III, out of nowhere I will sometimes get a high pitched whine, almost beep sound through my speakers.

I've heard that there is a problem with the SB Live! and my motherboard, but is this really true? I don't want to use onboard sound, but if I have to, maybe I should. I recently added the Microsoft HotFix for Win2000 and disabled AGP 4x. It hasn't crashed yet, but it has gone a full 2 hours one time without crashing, but that's as stable as it gets.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. The last thing I want to do is return this.

A few thing you can try.

1) Install SP1 for 2000.
2) Uninstall and Reinstall SB Live drivers. Make sure your using Win 2000 SB Live drivers.
3) Check and make sure Sound card and ALL wires are seated properly.
4) Disable Onboard sound.
5) Try installing another sound card if you can.
6) Check speaker wires and make sure there seated all the way in the sound card.
7) Last thing if you havnt yet. Try swithing to another PCI slot!

Just to let you know I'm running the same Board/VIA drivers/UDMA-100 and using the same Sound card SB Live and dont have any problms what so ever playing games! The other thing I can see differant is I have SP 1 installed.

Good Luck!
Buck

Could it be that your VGA card and SB Live! is sharing the same IRQ? Check during boot-up when it shows a list of devices and its IRQs used. Hit the 'PAUSE' key to pause the screen.

Just installed SP1, no difference. Onboard sound is also disabled. I just tried reinstalling the VIA drivers from the CD, no go. I'll try the other stuff in a bit.

Keep us posted. You have me curious.

Also try another PCI slot.

If anything RMA the board back and try another. I really dont think its a K7T Pro2-A + SB Live running together is the problem. Because like I said Im running both of them also.

I have the same problem with the onboard sound on the pro2a. It seems to happen mostly when playing Ashrons Call.

Same problem for me on a K7T Pro2, with a Vortex 2 based soundboard. I've noticed that IRQ11 is really popular, so I plan on starting off the new year with a freshly installed OS (Windows 2000 SP1) & methodical h/w installation.

I'll keep you all up to date

So, if you don't play games, is it ok?
I'm getting sb live in few days. I've installed the onboard audio drivers. If I wanna use sb live, should I remove the driver files also after I disable the onboard audio from bios?
