Hey guys,

I jumped on that deal at Frys for my parents so they get a new rig. I got the 2200+/K7s5apro combo for 69.99, I got 512 megs of "patriot" ram, and I got that case/300watt psu for 19.99 (nice thing was the psu is an Allied).

Now I set it up and plug in my old Geforce2, my old 20 gig Maxtor, and my old 12xSony.

I turn it on. I get nothing.

"Its okay - I have never built a pc that turned on the first time expect for my brother's one"

So I go back make sure everything is secure try again, nothing.

I check to see if I missed a jumper somewhere....nothing.

Tried Again, nothing.

I unplugged front USB hoping that was the cause

Tried again, nothing.

I went to MAxtor's site and got the jumper position for my HDD and saw it was fine but i checked b/c i remember i had a pc that wouldn't turn on because the jumper was set on the wrong one. (I have a 20gig 5400RPM model) I had it set on "Master" though there was something called "Master with CLJ" that had an extra jumper that i didn't have so i ignored it.

Tried again, nothing

reseated AGP card, restuck in ram, reconnected psu connection to mobo

tried again, nothing.

I knew I had the cpu on right and I made sure the cpu fan connected to the motherboard;s slot specified just for the cpu

tried again, nothing

tried disconnecting the cdrom, nothing...

tried a different power cable, nothing.

I'm not running out of ideas. The only thing I could guess would be a floppy but I don't the k7s5apro (revision 5 if anyone cares) demands a floppy or else it won't boot.

Do you guys have an idea what it could be?

Dead PSU (I don't have a spare :\ ) or a bad motherboard is what I'm thinking but I'm seriously hoping its something trivial because Frys is about a 40 minute drives from where I am.

Any ideas, suggestions? do you think I need a floppy and that will do it? Or am I missing something completely trivial?

EDIT:

J0.....

Three beeps mean to reseat memory. I just popped it out and thought why not stick it in the next bank.. Did and worked like a charm. I just finsihed installing everything on it (and I can definitely attest to the slowness of that 5400 20gig Maxtor...it works just like a charm but man i can notice the lag...they won't though ;) )

Who would've thought the problem would've been
a) Power and Reset buttons are switched backwards
b) Reseat Ram

Well thanks everyone!

[*]pull the motherboard out of the case
[*]only connect the cpu, one stick of memory, and the powersupply
[*]use a screwdriver to short the 2 power pins (where you connect the power switch) to turn it on

Does it power on? Do any of the fans start to spin? If not then you've narrowed it down to a few items. :)

K7S5As are extremely picky about what PSU you try to use. Try a different PSU and if that does not work, more than likely it is a mobo problem.

What he said. And I've never heard of Patriot-brand RAM either... is that something you can test in another system?

He mentioned that he had an Allied psu, and they are of good quality. I've built dozens of pc's using the K7S5A and have rarely run into a psu problem when using a "generic", but as we know YMMV.

I had problems with even decent brand PSUs. My enermax 300W would not work, but the Antec 250W worked fine.

omfg...error in the book. The reset and power buttons were switched. I knew it was something stupid and trivial!

turned it on plugged it all in but then I got a beeping error

I would hear the normal Post which is good, but no video on the moniter or anything else it seemed

"It went "BEEP" [pause for a few secononds] BEEP BEEP"

So I went Post(which means beep)....then it just sat that and it went beep, followed by a pause and then two rapid beeps in sucessions.

I checked the manual but it doesn't even had a trouble shootingsection so i'm checking their site as we speak..

anyone familiar with them know what that specific beep pattern represents?
