K7s5a won't boot at 1800xp speed (~1500mhz)

I can't get my 1800xp amd cpu to boot reliably on my K7s5a mobo.
It boots sometimes but then locks up and I get a black screen on boot up.
When I clear the CMOS it resets everything to default settings and starts up ok, except it now only runs at 1150 mhz.
The setting I need to adjust is under the "CPU Plug and Play Settup" page in the bios.
It seems to only run reliably at 100/133 - for cpu fequency/dram frequency. This boots to 1150 .
The 133/133 setting is what I require to get 1500mhz ( 1800xp).
Do I have a bad CPU? or do I need to upgrade a bios or driver or something??
I have DDR 266 ram and flashed the latest bios upgrade.

this board has notoriously bad chipset cooling. the heatsink on the chipset is held on with some double sided tape and has no retention pins. If you touch it under load you will see that it's quite cool to the touch. This is because it doesn't have any thermal contact with the chipset whatsoever. This is a very well documented issue. Remove the heatsink on the chipset and remove the double sided tape. Apply thermal adhesive or thermal paste with crazy glue in all 4 corners. You will now see that the chipset's heatsink is scalding hot under load because it's doing it's job. Apples to oranages, this will let you boot to 133 fsb.
Good Luck

Upgrade BIOS!!!!!!!!! I had the same problem as well and then I updated my BIOS snd it fixed all my stbility problems.
