*** I have since fixed the problem of Windows getting stuck at the "preparing to shut down" screen, but now it reboots instead of shutting down... see post below***

Original Post:

Just installed this sucker 2 days ago. Works great except now it won't power down when Windows 98 SE shuts down; it gets stuck at the preparing for shutdown screen. At least Windows appears to be closing out okay, since it doesn't run scandisk when I power back up, but it's a pain in the ass to have to hold the power button in for 5 seconds to shut the thing off.

I've tried everything listed in the MS knowledge base for Win 98 SE shutdown problems; does anyone have any other suggestions? The mobo has a bios dated 12/15/01. If not, does anyone know how to set the power button so it only has to be pressed for power down (as opposed to being held for 5 seconds)?

This is definately an OS problem, not a MB problem. This has plagued Win98 since it's release. You said you tried all the MS solutions; did you also apply the "shutdown patch" that I have seen listed? It is called the "Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement". You can find it here.

Can you give me so more details, like did you install any new peripahls, etc...or software. For awhile, my Asus P3V4X wouldn't shutdown cause of SB Live issue, and I heard of cases because of AntiVirus software. Also go into Safe Mode and try to shutdown. If it shutdown properly, then its a software issue. After that goto Run, type in MSCONFIG and start disabling in the startup, and see if thats causing your system not shutdown properly.

Thanks guys. I already installed the shutdown supplement to no avail. I'm at work right now, but I'll try shutting down from safe mode tonight and see if that works; that's a good suggestion because it doesn't load drivers.

Okay, figured out it was an old PCI DVD decoder card. I disabled it permanently, switched to a software DVD program, and now it's fine... for the most part.

BUT NOW, it reboots instead of shutting down! 🙁 Any ideas on this?

I had the same exact problem with Win 98, Hercules old skool Geforce DDR, and previous verison of Nvidia reference drivers. It kept on rebooting, I loaded an older verison of the drivers, and it work fine.

I had a dual boot system, and on the Win2k boot, no probs. It might be a driver issue too. Might want to check that out. I went into safe mode, removed the video card from device manager, and upon normal boot directed the video card to the older drivers.

see if reloaded newer or older drivers work for you.
