Hi

well here's the story
I buy an xp2400 for a friend's machine, he has a k7s5a pro board, so compatible, I install the xp and it boots as duron 2400mhz, nice eh ? now I play with it, do this do that, check bios (bios up to date, flash it just to be sure) in the end Im at a loss. Now the strange part (yes I know 🙂 ) after a shut down and unplug the pc boots and it shows xp2400, after yet another shut down and uplug it goes back to duron 🙂

bad mobo ? corrupt bios ? aliens inside ? 🙂

anyone have an idea ?

let me know

Thank you
Dan

Reads to me that the CPU's full cache is coming and going...you might want to reseat the CPU and/or check 1 CPU identifier on the L2 cache

did the reseat, I was thinking I bought the wrong cpu or something, so I pulled it and took a look and then put it back
how do I check the cpu identifier on the l2 cache ?

Thank you
Dan

Before you do anything... What does CPU-Z say?

it might just be a bug in the bios scaring you at post while there's nothing to be worried about. 😉

check cpu-z while it says XP and then Duron & if they are the same I would not worry about it anymore.

oh I did that, win/cpuz/aida/etc all say Duron 2400 🙂

ok let me power it on and give you the full spec they show

Thanks
Dan

Bios CPU settings: fsb 100mhz, multi 10.5 🙂
if I change to 133 it wont boot

Thanks
Dan

Could be a couple of things...
worse is that part of the cache died or prolly it's reading that way because it's not running @ the default FSB

That's very weird... there is no 100mhz Duron over 1300mhz.

It's got the cache of a Duron but the highest duron made was Applebred 1800mhz...

It says Thoroughbred so it might be a sempron but no... Semprons have 256k cache.... that's one weird chip you got there.

Hi

Led, I dont know if the cache died, because when it does boot as xp, with full cahce, it will bench and work fine
I cant run it at 133 fsb because it wont boot, only when it decides to boot as xp I can change the fsb to 133

Budman, yes the specs are funny. I'll dl the amd util and post results.

Thanks
Dan

I'm more inclined to believe it's the FSB...you can try new RAM or put the CPU in another Mobo that'll do the 133FSB...I remember the same problem that happen to someone on another thread who was @ 110FSB

Hi

guys sorry it took so long to update, couldnt find a xp board to test the cpu on
yep its the board 🙁
now I gotta buy a new one (running to the classifieds to post a wtb 🙂 )

Thanks again to all !!!

Dan

Budman - amd util was saying the same

LED - I still dont understand what exactly did you mean by "its the fsb" ? the board can support 133 fsb easy and xp2400 is on the compatible list, the ram is pc2100, also tried other ram
whenever the board boots as duron its impossible to change to 133, if you do so the machine wont boot until you clear the cmos

Thanks
Dan

ecs doesn't let u run async cpu/fsb speed though. memory fuzzy on that one. still. a sempron would be 166mhz bus i think? i got another machine with 2400+sempron aka 2100+xp😛 thats one weird ass chip there..anyways, if running at 100fsb was wrong, it woulda came up at some really really low speed, not 2400+

Dunno what Rev you have but many of the Mobo's had problems running @ 133...still yet it's better than getting a remarked square 😉

0roo0roo - ecs has async, well the cpu is a T-core, its the board, its acting up something funny, I mean it shows 2400mhz duron and in bios the fsb is 100x10.5 🙂
will bench as a xp2400 🙂

LED - its rev5, dont think they even did any other revs on the k7s5a pro, anywho even if fsb was the problem, why wouldnt it just boot as xp1800 and 100fsb ?
plus when it did boot as an xp2400 the system was rock solid, no problems, played lan games a whole night with my friend to test this thing out

nah dont think I got screwed, I bought it from a serious seller + it does boot as xp now and then
and on the test board (k7s5a non-pro by the way 🙂 ) it boots as xp2400 all the time

Thanks
Dan

Im not getting the xp squares thing

PC chips ? ? ?

actually Ive had a good experience with ecs in the past, funny as it may seem with the k7s5a non-pro, I had one running a t1.33 for over a year, no problems what so ever, granted not many options or goodies, but stable so no complaints on my part

Thanks
Dan

The best bios for the K7S5A PRO is the original. Do a check online, and find the first Bios for the series (I think you can use the one from the K7S6A, as well). I have a Pro V5 that takes even bartons with CPUFSB overclocks to 166/166. The only time it reads a different CPU from the one installed is when its overclocked, or if you have a PRO bios running on a v1 or v3 regular K7S5A. Make sure the board is a PRO, if so find the original series BIOS, if not a PRO get the correct Bios. or use a cheepoman Bios

its a pro for sure
do you mean 21209 ? the first release
will it even support xp2400 ?
tried cheepoman's bios same result, it can be xp on a good day and duron on most others
by now Im quite sure its a hardware malfunction

Thanks
