i just bought a mobo k7s5a pro, an athlon 2000+processor and a maxtor 40 gig hard drive. i am able to install win 98se onto the hard drive but when i try to upgrade to xp, i get an error message that says the C: drive is corrupted. i bought another hard drive and still got the same error message. i tried another copy of win xp and still got the same error message. what is wrong here? HELP!!!!!

Are those legit XP CD's, or bootleg? If bootleg, be aware that we don't discuss non-legit software around these parts. A word to the wise... yeah. 😉

As for the corruption problem, try a new, flat, 80-wire IDE cable next and see what happens.

Have you tried a clean install of XP and not just an upgrade?

Also, try moving around some of your pieces of hardware. My regualar K7S5A has some strange quirks that are resolved by moving things around. For example, if I install XP with a zip drive, the Zip becomes my C drive. The mobo will not boot with my HD on IDE 1 and opticals on 2, but it will in the reverse. The board has worked great once these were resolved.

ok, here's what i did: i moved my hard drive to ide port # 2 and set my bios to boot from 'ide1'. i presume that actually means ide 2 on the mobo. now, the mobo seems to allow me to install win xp and other programs. when i put another hd on ide 1 on the mobo. it still says the hd is corrupt and i get miscellaneous errors reading the drive. i am beginning to wonder if the mobo came with a dysfunctional ide 1 port..... what do you think?

Well either your diagnosis is correct (toasted IDE port), or you have bad RAM there. This creates fake "corrupted files" messages because the files go bad in RAM, not on storage. Check that (www.memtest86.com), and if OK, I'd return the mainboard for replacement. (And next time, be extra careful when installing. Nothing in the PC is as easily zapped with an electrostatic discharge as an IDE port.)
