my sys.

K7S5A Pro
AMD XP 2200+
1ghz pc2700 ram
Win XP Pro

When the computer going to windows, it shows find new hardware 5 times, all USB Controller, but the system can't find the driver for it. I try to have the system look in the cd that come w/ the motherboard, still no good.

i forgot to mention one thing, i just replaced this my old mb & thunderbird 900mhz w/ this new set k7s5a pro & xp 2200+, everything work good except the usb controller.

Anybody that have this problem or know how to get around this one? Please post here or email at@tqelectronic.com

Very much appreciated.

Do you have the USB function enabled in the BIOS? Also, check Device Manager to see what is listed there for USB controllers. I believe there are two. XP should install its own drivers so I don't think you'll need the CD. If you have controllers listed in Device Manager, delete them. Reboot and go into the BIOS. Make sure USB Function is enabled. Save and exit. Boot into XP and the New Hardware wizard should load them automatically.
That's a best guess.

the usb is enable in the bios, on the device manager, there are 5 Universial Serial Bus (USB) Controller list under Other devices. Windows XP can't find the driver for them.

Click on and remove them in Device Manager. Then reboot and let XP find the drivers again. Make sure nothing is plugged into the ports when you do this. You may need your XP disk to do this but I doubt it.

Am I correct in assuming that this wasn't a "fresh" install of the OS then? Could be part of the problem. However, when XP tries to locate the driver for the controller can you tell where it is looking? Make sure it is looking to Windows drivers.

Nope, this is a known problem with this mobo - I returned one when I was unable to get USB2 to function properly on it. I'm still working on a solution for some of my clients, I'll post if I figure out how to get the proper USB2 drivers.

Also, do you have WinXP Service Pack 1 installed (yes = good)? If you don't get SP1 installed before installing the motherboard drivers, then the USB 2.0 may not ever work right until you proceed in that order. Like Buz2b said, if you're trying to re-use a previous Windows installation, forget it. ;) Back up your important files, if you have some, and then do a clean installation in this order:

  • reinstall Windows from the CD
  • install Service Pack 1 before installing your motherboard drivers, which may require that you download SP1 and put it on a CD so you have it available... you can get it from here
  • install motherboard drivers
  • install DirectX 9.0B
  • install your video card drivers
  • go to Windows Update and get all remaining critical updates
Hope that helps :)

New mobo with different chipset = fresh install, or you can get problems such as you describe.

Windows XP should be able to use the SiS OHCI (USB 1.1) and VIA UHCI (USB 1.1 compatibility mode of the USB2 controller chip) right out of the box; the USB 2.0 function of the VIA chip requires SP1.

If it fails to install drivers for all of them, then your XP installation probably is hosed.

My friend has the same board and the same issue. His winXP install was fresh including SP1 and still the USB will not work. All is fine in Device Manager, but no USB.

PS: USB is enabled in BIOS.

This is what I am talking about, with a fresh install. Even with SP1 loaded, only USB1.1 works.

You need to have SP1 _and_ install the vendor provided drivers for the VIA USB2 chip. XP SP1 should have detected both pairs of USB 1.1 controllers (two SiS OHCI, three ports each, and two VIA UHCI, two ports each) alright, with only one EHCI instance left driverless - the USB2 part of the VIA chip.

Great. Where do we get the EHCI USB2 driver from, then?

Interesting. Well I went fishing at VIA, who says to get them from Microsoft. I went to the Windows Update Catalog and can't find a listing for VIA Technologies in the "Other" category where they list USB hubs and such. ECS doesn't seem to have anything either. :p

Looks like it's time for either ECS or VIA to get this handled, unless the driver is on the mobo's support CD somewhere, and it sounds like it isn't.

These driver's aren't particularly VIA. Like OHCI and UHCI common standards on how to make a USB 1.x controller, the EHCI programming model is a standard. Microsoft should be providing the driver. Actually, according to

http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=298#windows2

chip vendors aren't even allowed to provide EHCI drivers for download.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/columns/jones/02august05.asp

... is Microsoft's instructions on how to get USB 2.0 going on Windows XP, using Microsoft's driver.

So if I understand their article correctly, the procedure is to

  • ensure that the USB controller is recognized at least at USB 1.1 level, with a device plugged into it and operating (mouse, perhaps?)
  • go to Windows Update for a driver

Does it work? pspada or anyone got a ballistics report for us?

The article's suggestion for manual setup is to "Obtain the Latest Windows XP Service Pack," which is evidently not a sure-fire solution. My initial advice was drawn from the routine that works for nForce2.

I've gotten USB2 up and running on several various nForce2 mobos, and know the gotchas there - but this does not help at all with the K7S5A Pro. USB 1.1 works fine, but even after loading the latest SP1 and visiting winblowsupdate.microsloth.com, no USB 2.

In my experience Windows will not find the driver, you have to run the VIA setup launcher (has worked everytime for me in 20+ builds with the K7S5A PRO).

That would be great for my friend. I will let him know what you have discovered.

What DieHardware said seems correct.

I read you cannot download USB2 drivers ( will try to find the article)
They come on the motherboard driver CD.
The USB2 is a via chip.
