K7S5A not recognising CPU speed

On bootup the cpu is showing 1150Mhz, even Direct X shows this speed. I have an AMD XP1800 cpu so surely it should read around 1400Mhz? Tried changing cpu in setup, but to no avail. I'm concerned that my system isn't utilising its full capacity. Hope someone can help. Thanks for reading:confused:

You will need to go into the BIOS and change the "Frequency" to 133/133; assuming of course that you have either PC133 or DDR PC2100 RAM. In fact, it would help if you would list your components; including Power supply. BTW, what revision of this MB do you have? It is stenciled on the MB, usually around the PCI slots, low in the case. Also, look to see that there is a small sticker next to the CPU Socket that says "XP" on it.

The FSB is only set to 100. In the bios change it to 133/133 AS was said, you must have pc133 or ddr 2100.

His board is the second revision or earlier. 3rd and after will display the PR ratings of the XP instead of the MHZ.

Thanks very much for the help guys. Changed it to 133/133, rebooted and it reads Athlon XP1800+. I appreciate your help, as soon as anyone mentions BIOS i break out in a cold sweat.

Don't worry, you are not alone. Heck, I still have to "ask" myself" several times if I REALLY want to update a BIOS. It is always a bit of a challange and a source of worry. HOWEVER, it is not a "daunting" as some would think.

My k7S5a will show the CPU speed (XP1600) at 100mhz FSB but will not show ANY speed at 133/133.
guess I shoulden't complain too much though as I have 2 sticks of generic PC100 running@133!!

BUTCH, if it doesn't know how to speed rate your CPU, then that sounds like a good moment for a BIOS update.

Yeah, it's not that daunting in terms of difficutly, more of a "man, if my power goes out, I'm going to kill someone down at the plant" type of thing.

Nowadays, after learning that lesson once, I only hook up to my UPS when doing a BIOS flash. Of course, since doing so there has never been a problem that the UPS has had to "saved" me from. Figures. However, if I didn't use the UPS you gotta know we'd have a temporary blackout as soon as I started. :Q:|

hehe, that's why I never do BIOS updates on Fridays ... if it goes wrong, I peel the ROM chip out to reprogram it @work the next day :)

Yea pete, I cant figure out why it wont show me speed @133 but sandra says 1.4 and control panel
shows same and the board is running soooo good right now and I'm allready getting PC100 to run
@133 I dont think there is much OC potential right now and of course the horror stories at badflash
.com I think I'll just leave it the **** alone.

I'm not talking about overclocking (as if I ever would ...). I'd just make sure I have a BIOS that knows my processor.

What is the "actual frequency"? I'm assuming you mean cpu speed. I take it you do not have an XP1600 but something better. What revision is your board? Does it have the small "XP" stickers next to the CPU socket? Also check your BIOS version/date on bootup.

" I take it you do not have an XP1600 but something better"... Buzz...huh?? of course I ment 1.4Ghz
The board is a rev 1.0. Not sure about the sticker or the BIOS ver. I'll have to check it on next
boot

Those are the only "clues" I had to what you actually had. Nowhere did you state that you actually had an Athlon 1.4 T-Bird, only that sandra and control panel "said" it was one; if that is what you meant by " Buzz...huh?? of course I ment 1.4Ghz". Next, if you actually have a revision 1 board (and confirm it), you will not see any "XP" stickers around the socket. However, I do think you need a BIOS update, as Pete mentioned earlier. What do you actually have the CPU and DRAM set at in the BIOS; 100/133, 133/133, 133,100?

OK Buzz, the BIOS on bootup is 4/29/2002 s. I cant see an XP sticker next to the CPU socket
but there might be one, as it is difficult to get a good view with everything installed. I am
running @ 133/133 with the "safe" memory setting.

So your CPU (a 1.4 Athlon T-Bird, 266 fsb) is listed as an Athlon 1600+ by the board during the boot process. Hmm.
Did you flash the BIOS to the current one that you listed, the 42902? The reason I ask is that if this is a Rev. 1 board, it would be very unusual for it to have that BIOS on it. It is practically the latest and was released long after they moved on to later versions of that board. There is one other BIOS that is more recent. It can be found here. Although I'm not sure it would do much good. One thing that worked a long while back when things were a bit "quirkey" (for lack of a better term) was to flash back to an older version of BIOS. I know it sounds silly but there were some BIOS files that just worked well and were better than others. In this instance, you might want to try Version 010920 Release Date: 09/26/2001. The only other thing that stands out is your "generic" PC100 RAM. If you have someone you could borrow a stick of "regular" PC133 RAM from, that might be worth an experimental test; just for "giggles". Also, if this is a Rev. 1 MB, you will NOT see the XP stickers (they are white usually) next to the socket. Keep us informed. Of course, as you said earlier, it is running soooooooo good; might not be worth trying anything. :D

I looked for a sticker on the board when I installed it to try to determine the Rev.# but didn't see any.
Sandra reported it has ver. 1.0 but I dont put much faith in that. I was comfortable flashing my old BH6
but then I was reading at badflash.com that most bad flashes are due to poor quality chips on the
board got me thinking....Afraid actually! Last night the my system stating acting "flaky" Mouse got
erratic, had a few "hard" locks so I reset to 100/100 to give my elcheapo memory a break. Didn't help.
I disabled audio and it seemed OK so I D/L'ed the latest audio driver and tried that and it's been working
OK this morning. It polls the floppy every now and then but there's no disk in it! Maybe I'll go to Best-buy
this weekend as they are selling Cruical 256 DDR 2100 for $36 after rebate! Oh well, thanks for the help
Buzz...
