K7S5A no boot, no video, help please ...

I double checked all connections. When I turn the power on I get 2 short beeps, then 8 long beeps. It will then access the drives for a couple seconds and then I get 2 short beeps, followed by 1 long beep. There is no video being displayed so I don't have any post codes.

I'm wondering if it may be a processor problem. When my firend initially put the heatsink on, he put it on backwards and there was an edge applying pressure right on the core. When I took it apart, I noticed some purpleish stuff around the core. I'm guessing the core is cracked. Would that cause the post beeps above?

Purple stuff is never good, I would say that you've fried the processor my friend

You shouldn't really do this but you could take the processor out of the motherboard and turn the machine on and see if you get the same beeps as when you do when the processor is in - this would confirm that the processor is dead but the purple gunk on the chip should be enough evidence really.

Not necessarily. Are you talking about this?, there is 'purple-ish' stuff on that core (First picture), but it doesnt look cracked to me...

Have you anyway of trying it with another video card? Your Vid card might be dead... (but that still doesnt explain the beeps)

I'm going to grab a friends extra Duron and throw it in and see what happens. I might try a different vid card too as by looking at the PDF it appears that the initial beep sequence indicates a problem with the video memory (although the card worked perfectly previously in a different setup).

Migro that is exactly the stuff I saw next to the core. So it looks like that is NOT an indication of a fried core.

Right now all is pointing to a video problem. I will try a different vid card and see what happens. THanks.

Swapping out parts to check for problems is the best way to search for a peice of troubling hardware. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks all, tried a new vid card and it posted fine. Switched back to the other one and it posted fine. I guess it wasn't seated fully, eventhough it looked like it was. No problem with the CPU *whew*.

I've had the same problem (my motherboard boots) but yesterday when I was hooking up a tape drive,I took my videocard out and back in and I got 8 beeps too. So I guess its a universal problem bro.
