What is the LATEST revision? 3.1 or 4?

Some guys got revision 5....

What is the difference?

Doesn't matter much ... as long as you don't have a revision 1.0 one, these early ones don't run XP processors.

Later ones are clearly identified by the "XP" sticker next to the CPU socket.

Note that there are quite a few different _versions_ (not revisions, mind the difference): With or w/o LAN, w/ stereo ALC100 or 4-channel CMI9738 audio codec - all of them available as anonymized OEM "M830" board or branded retail "Elitegroup K7S5A" (black paint job).

regards, Peter

Peter,

My newest ECS K7S5A (retail) mb is silkscreened "VER:3.1" on the mb edge, but also has a small white number "4." sticker in the corner next to mounting hole and pci slots .................. ?

I am pretty sure this mb would be Revision Version 3.1 ........ but what's with the number 4. sticker?

Thanks,
George

Well maybe it's been made on production line #4 or whatever. I don't know.

Well ............... I guess it could be Revision 4. on a VER: 3.1 older pcb ......... ?

Beats the crap out of me ............... I would sure like it if ECS would provide more information on the details!

I have two questions.
1. Which revision does Newegg have?
2. I've heard the later revisions don't support older 1.4 ghz processors. I would like to get a thoroughbred in the future, so will this be a problem?

I just checked ECS website and under CPU's supported, they say that version 1.x supports amd xp processors. This leads me to believe that even their version 1.0 supports the AMD XP processors as long as you have a newer bios loaded. Based on their bios data if you have bios version 1.11.21 or later version, then any board (1.x) will support the xp. I certaintly hope so, because i just ordered a xp 2000+ and im counting on my version 1.0 board working because i dont want to order a new MB just yet. Can anyone else confirm whether they have an XP processor running fine on a version 1.0 board? Heres some links showing the cpu's supported by the K7S5a and a link to the bios updates for the k7s5a:

[L=]http://www.ecs.com.tw/download/download.htm[/L]

I was just concerned because someone above said the version 1.0 boards dont support the xp and i dont think this is true.

What peter said was correct, the number of the sticker is the line it came off of.

The 1.X version does support XP's with the later BIOS releases, but in the same way most KT133A boards due, by a micro code update. Versions 2.x and above(with the XP sticker) had the value of 2 resistors changed to fix the problem of XP cpu's not always booting the system. Same problem with allot of kt133a boards, amd calls for a different resister value to regulate the voltage or amperage(can't remember which) on XP CPU's.

I have heard just as many people say an XP worked on their 1.X K7S5A as haven't. I have never personally tried it though.

Well .............. if the small white sticker is indeed the number of the line it came off of then:

My 1st mb has NO Revision number on it ............... but came off Number "1" line .............. ?
My 2nd mb has NO Revision number on it .............. but came off Number "3" line .............. ?
My 3rd mb is marked "VER: 3.1" (Socket marked XP).............. but came off Number "4" line .............. ?

Frankly, there is such a lack of good information, and such an abundance of mis-information/speculation on this mb, I'm not sure we can even positively identify the boards we are discussing ........... !

thanks for the extra info. My mobo does not have a revision number on it, but sisoft sandra identifies it as version 1.0. There is a little white sticker at the bottom of the left corner by the 5th pci slot that says simply "2". I guess ill try the xp 2000+ processor. If it works great, if not, I guess ill have a mobo for the 1 ghz tbird Im currently using and buy a new mobo, probably the shuttle kt333. Ill let you know in a couple of days :)
