K7S5A Experiance

I finally got a problem with a K7S5A on my 5th one, and it was caused by my own laziness. 😉

I decided to get my parents a 1Ghz + K7S5A combo from Frys. My parents had aquired a good ammount of crap on their HD, and i deffinitly didnt want to wipe the drive. So i just ejected the old KT133 board and plopped in the K7S5A, all the while hoping that XP Pro would pick up on the change, and not load the VIA drivers.

To my dismay, it didnt pick up on the change... leading to a BSOD everytime XP would boot :disgust: So i had to install Home (as my Pro disk vanished) and the install of XP Home over XP Pro is nowhere near smooth... much of the apps have to be reinstalled etc. All in all, i wish i wasnt lazy, as it made the job much harder. Oh well, they should be happy with that comp for a while.

ape man has it rght....check it

put your OS on a small partition (~2gb) and keep everything else on a another partiiton...u need to reinstall the OS?..just wipe the OS partition and install over it...yes, you need to reinstall your other programs (most of them), but all their settings, etc. are still in tact...good stuffs.

Im well aware of the fact that you should always do a clean install... ive built my fair share of computers over the last 10+ years (around 95-100, counting work). Note that I admitted it was a lazy thing to do, and claimed responsibility for it.

And i never claimed to be able to spell.

<< Ouch..

I have my HD partitioned twice..

a 4 gb for Windows XP pro and 36 gb for data.

Why do you do it this way...just wondering?

At least with Win9x variants, I would delete all of the devices before swapping mobos. Once in place in the new system, I let Winders redetect the new goods and install drivers as I go.

i've never tried this, but can't u just delete the current config hive in the registry? wouldn't that force win XX (including the NT variants) to re install everything?

as i said, i've never tried this and don't recommend it to anyone who hasnt completely backed up their system first.
