semprons need 166mhz fsb

k7s5a can do 166mhz with 3rd party bios.

will the 2 work together?

The modded bios has settings for 166mhz but I never seen a board actualy do it.

K7S5A has the clock generator to do 166MHz, and there are quite a few reported successes, but it is not likely. You have to use a FSB change utility in Windows because the board won't boot with 166MHz. And there is the risk of accelerated failure.

Sempron is the replacement for Duron at the budget performance range. Sempron is slower than Athlon XP at the same model number and costs the same if not more. You'd be better to go with a Barton.

The safest choice is an xp2400 at 266 fsb. The k7s5a wasn't designed for any 166 fsb cpu.

i have a boxed sempron 2500+ (thorton core) w/k7vta3 mobo (fry's combo special $69). my friend might give me a xp2800+.

i have a spare k7s5a. if i get the xp2800+, i'll put it in the k7vta3 since the k7s5a cant handle anything over xp2400+. then put the sempron 2500+ into the k7s5a.

You'll be underclocking the sempron because they come at 166mhz too.

thought semprons didnt work at 133fsb, thus mods on the k7s5a to 166fsb?

Semprons are basicaly T-breds on a 166mhz fsb,so yes it will work but at a reduced speed since the K7S5a only goes up to 133mhz reliably,150mhz if you're very lucky.

Semprons are T-bred B, Thorton, or Barton, all 166 MHz FSB. The K7S5A can't do that, and consequently, there's no BIOS for it that'd put the right product name to the Semprons either.
