K6BV3+/66 Rev B+ & AMD K6-2+450ACZ

I just bought a used AMD K6-2+ 450MHz processor and I cannot get my computer to boot with it in place. I have set all the jumpers according to my owner's manual for a DFI K6BV3+/66 motherboard (Rev B+). The manual says it can handle a AMD K6-2+ 450 Mhz processor. However, I don't even get to the BIOS... just a dead blank screen. Any suggestions?

I am running WIN98SE. I believe I have the most current BIOS.

The computer boots fine with an AMD K6 553MHz chip.

Thanks in advance.

From the benchmarks I've seen, the K6-2 has very little perf. diff. than K62. I've been trying to find a K6-3+, but have had no luck. IAC, the following is pretty standard in "blank screen on boot" troubleshooting:

Boilerplate-01:
1- Drive data cable on upside down or only on half the pins or shifted a pin or two (usu Floppy or Zip drives) or bent pin(s).
2- RAM, CPU or AGP video card not seated properly, or bent pin.
3- CMOS needs to be cleared - particularly when returning to lower speed settings.
.bh.

p.s. I've had to reseat some CPUs several times to get them to work - d@*n cheap sockets!.bh.

So as far as performance, I am probably better off with the K6-2 533MHz than the K6-2+ 450 MHz processor? I was hoping the + made up for the slower MHz.

1 - This is not the problem... unit boots with the K6-2 533 MHz processor.

3 - Cleared CMOS to drop down to K6-2+ 450MHz processor speed. Still no BIOS. I replaced the K6-2+ with the K6-2 and it booted fine. The BIOS indicated the CMOS had been cleared.

I also reseated the processor several times. Must be a bad processor. How can I test the processor? I bought it online and can only return it if it is truly DOA.

Again, thanks!

It sounds like you've done adequate testing to show that the CPU is defective. You say you think you have the latest BIOS, well I would be sure of that before giving up. This is the latest BIOS rev. K6BV30412.ZIP (129 KB) dated 4/12/2k. I would be kind of leery of a mobo that the mfr. stopped updating the BIOS over 2 yrs. ago - at least my Gigabyte G5-AX had an update in the last year.
. The only other thing you could do is try it in another mobo that is 2+ rated like the FIC 503+ Rev.C or the Gigabyte G5-AX rev. 4.x.
. Perhaps it's time we gave up on Socket 7 and moved to Athlon/Duron. New mobo/cpu/ram can be had for well under $150. I know I'm not going to sink any more money into mine - unless I can find some ECC RAM real cheap :) . GL.
