I'll upgrade my old computer, I know K6-3 is faster(256kb same speed cache ), but it is much more expensive. 2X-3X price of K6-2 at the same speed. So I want to know hows the performance difference between the 2 CPUs. This comp only used for Office applications and browsing webpages, no 3d gaming.

Cpu Comparisons

This is an old comparison but the difference is roughly 50 Mhz as a K6-3 450 performs better then a K6-2 500 b/c of the addition of the on board L2 and the introduction of L3.

For what you are doing though, K6-2 would be fine.

I had a K6-2 450 and it was fine for just surfing and mp3's and all of those normal easy to do tasks...

Mind you, it's not very fast at encoding/decoding mp3's, etc... but it works fine for what you want it for.. lets just say the only way I would spend the extra on a K6-3 is if I was doing alot of CPU intensive apps, which you are not.. so, with that said... I'd go with the K6-2 and save some cash for ya.

What kind of mb do you have? some old S7 mb's don't multiply up to 500 or 550. if it is a newer mb see if it can support the "+"(mobile) series of K6's. they run on a 2.0 core as apposed to 2.2. the K6-2+ processors have some on die cache(128?).
btw I had a k6-2 400-oc to 450 but kind of warm, no go to 500. got a k6-3+ 450 oc to 600 and purrrs like a kitten.

also the k6-3(@450) was considerably "snappier" than the k6-2 400-surfing, mp3's, several windows open. using win98se. I could not find any benchmarks to really prove this, just .felt a lot faster bouncing between windows.

how mush memory do you have? having at least 128mb will make the most difference.

I have a 450 MHz K6-3+ and I have worked on a 500 MHz K6-2, and I can tell you that my K6-3+ feels considerably faster in some things and makes no difference in others. I got the K6-3+ when they were first becoming available and alot of people were selling them on E-bay and stuff so I was able to get it at a good price. It replaced a Pentium 233 MHz with MMX and the difference there was incredible. If you can find a K6-2+ or 3+ for a reasonable price, then get it, but if all you can reasonably get is a K6-2, then go with that. BTW if you want to go with a +, then make sure your motherboard has a bios capable of recognizing it. My FIC 503+ needed an updated BIOS, but now it rocks! Also, the K6-3+ I have will easily overclock to more than 550 MHz.
