So, I only use CRTs. I'm curious about any possible differnces in gfx card functions under the two type monitors. This is inspired by a tech support thread over HERE.

Is there any difference in the amount of "work" you gfx card must do with a CRT v. LCD? Would one or the other make your card run hotter?

Would one or the other make your card use more power? (I understand 2D apps require less than 3D, for example).

Or, is there absolutely no diff, such that your gfx card can't even tell what it's hooked to?

TIA,

Fern

No, would make no difference in the work (unless the resolution is larger)

It can tell what's connected, but it does no more work or anything like that. The only difference is that you need to use DVI/VGA adapters to hook up CRTs on modern cards. Some people say that they reduce quality over native VGA connections, but I've never had any problems with them. In any case, you can get DVI/VGA cables that allow you to drop the adapter.

There could be a difference since the TMDS is used when using DVI (LCD) and the RAMDAC when VGA is used. Not that it should matter, anyway, and the difference is probably <10W. The video card can tell what is connected if the device sends back info (as all DDC 2.0 compliant monitors should).

It's likely the OP's problem has nothing to do at all with the monitor. He likely has a video driver problem but I'll respond to his thread also.
