K&N Air Filters

Does anyone notice a different between K&N Air filters and competitors?

yeah, noticed a slight increase in engine response.

some people I know that have run K&N's air filters have also noticed the oil from the air filter lining their intake pipes.

some studies show they let more air thus thus dirt through. Guilty of putting too much oil when cleaning the filter

K&N does NOT filter as well as a paper filter. Also, it takes over 100,000 miles before it pays off.

Paper Filter: $20.
K&N: $60.
K&N Oil Kit: $20.
Paper filter life: 30,000 miles.
Time to break even on the K&N: 120,000 miles.

Plus there's the hour or two filter cleaning instead of the 5 minute replacement of a paper filter.

Bingo.....More oil the more dry time

this was following the K&N directions. Others let it dry longer. Same results.

It doesn't necessarily mean that more dirt is getting into the intake and engine. If a paper filter is overly restrictive and all significant dirt could be filtered by a more porous material, there's no reason not to use a K&N filter and get more power.

Yes, I put a K&N in a perfectly good Supra and the head gasket blew 9 months later. No more K&N for me.

K&N filters just as well as a paper filter from my experience. That said, we only used K&N filters on our Impala SS and Corvette Grand Sport. In other words, in vehicles with high performance engines.

Plenty of independant studies around on the net, they Do let more dirt pass thru the filter.

Does this hurt the motor long term, depends how long you keep the car or truck.
