Could that be from people over doing the oil when reapplying? If they used the recommended amount they should be fine right?

Paper filter life: 30,000 miles.
Time to break even on the K&N: 120,000 miles.
Plus there's the hour or two filter cleaning instead of the 5 minute replacement of a paper filter.

It doesn't necessarily mean that more dirt is getting into the intake and engine. If a paper filter is overly restrictive and all significant dirt could be filtered by a more porous material, there's no reason not to use a K&N filter and get more power.

The K&N and UNI filters were far less efficient at trapping dust, and note that they lose their flow advantage after filtering about 180 grams of dust.

Yes, I put a K&N in a perfectly good Supra and the head gasket blew 9 months later. No more K&N for me.
