Yup, I think it's particle board underneath, but the top is definitely a layer of real wood.
 
That's stuff not bad. Pretty nice-looking, actually. And it looks even better when they're as cheap as they are. I'm keeping Kmart in mind for when I have to furnish an apartment in the next two weeks.

It's heavy too...the coffee table probably weighs 35-40 lbs., and the end table is a good 20-25 lbs.

In school I remeber we had to keep buying Ikea chairs and tables over and over again. I guess they weren't designed for rough housing college guys. But they were so cheap we didn't mind too badly when we had to replace them.

glue and shredded wood is heavy...still not bad at all for $80
