Always have used klite, wondering if there are any pros/cons to using the other.

the CCCP guys say it best themselves (from the FAQ):

http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index...._CCCP_and_not_some_other_codec_pack.3F

But why the CCCP and not some other codec pack?

Simple reason: most other playback packs are broken, and some (Nimo) can cause irreversible damage to your system. CCCP is the result of long and complicated discussions, much testing and several years of collected encoding experience. We KNOW it works when installed properly, and the pack will do its best to resolve conflicts that previously installed stuff might cause. For the best results, uninstall any other codec packs and codecs before installing CCCP. The pack is also designed to be almost foolproof - the defaults work really nice for almost all people. The reason it was invented in the first place was so that we can tell you: "Uninstall everything else, install the pack and live forever happy" instead of flaming you for your idiotic taste in codecs, especially the 60MB ACE Codec Pack. That's just wrong.

I've used both, and K-Lite was just broken. It installed too many different apps that all tried to render one thing, and the system would then crash.

CCCP + Quicktime Alternative + Real Alternative is all you need.

It looks to me like CCCP is specifically built (would change settings for) anime.

K-Lite seems to be the most popular among everyone I've spoken too - but all codec packs have flaws that you need to have knowledge of to fix. The only way to avoid any and all problems that codec packs can give you, would be to avoid codec packs altogether.

I used both. Klite is not broken. It works great. CCCP + Quicktime Alternative + Real Alternative works the same, but you have to do the additional installs for Quicktime and Real where as Klite does it for you.

Codec packs are easy to use.. just install what you "need" from them and leave the rest of the stuff unselected so that you do not install the extra crap. It's exactly the same as going online and downloading the individual codecs. I use K-Lite and it saved me alot of time and headache by not having to hunt down all the different codecs that I need (I checked and the codecs were up to date in the pack at the time of download). If someone likes using the CCCP pack, then great. They all pretty much do the same.. just make sure that you install what you need and make sure it's up to date before installing.

i used to use k-lite also, but sometimes i'd run into issues with playback of certain codecs, i think maybe some of them conflicted with each other. CCCP also has very good support for OGM and MKV formats, which i run across frequently due to the anime i watch.

All in all, it's up to you, but i recommend cccp.

Alot of Anime I have is Matroska format and the quality is great. With the different media files just about any codec packs will do the job.. oh, and get a good media player, like VLC.

VLC ftw!

One thing that I experienced with K-lite, unfortunately, was finding a tampered version. I know it's completely unfair for that to taint my feelings about K-lite, but sadly that was a factor that made me feel safer just sticking with CCCP lol. Anyway, I've been very pleased with CCCP, and have had no bloat issues, and it's updated enough, so no complaints either way.

What if you don't watch any anime? I will never watch a single one in my life, so is CCCP worth considering? Right now I use K-Lite which works ok, but Quicktime is messed up somehow (I tried to install QT7.1, but Apple managed to screw that one up horribly on Windows XP x64 and 2k3 Server, so it left everything half-broken).

K-Lite is crap and CCCP is much better : ) answer your question :?

okay :! CCCP is newer better and isn't bloated like K-lite. The only real thing CCCP doesn't have is Quick time and i don't care about Quick time. CCCP got great MKV , OGG , H264 , XVID , DVIX ect support. Also its configuration setting available is very useful and hassle free. Just uninstall your k-lite codec pack and what other codec pack you have installed and try out CCCP :)

CCCP + AC3Filter + Quick Time 7 =

There is no need for codec packs in these days of VLC.

I use QT Alternative (for embedded crap) + XviD codec + VLC ftw.

Codec packs are evil. Out of the last 5 boxes brought to me for 'repair,' 4 were problems caused by codec packs.

ffdshow
nvidia purevideo
maybe ogg/flac

WTF else do you need? Takes 3 minutes!

For most formats you only need ffdshow + Media Player Classic (or VLC if you like a crappy interface heh). Real Alternative and QUicktime Alt are good too if you need those formats.

The only codec pack I'd consider using is DefilerPak. It includes ffdshow and a few extras that are sometimes necessary like Haali Media filter and some subtitle deal. Though you can just go ahead and download the included components separately if you don't want them all.

If you aren't into anime at all I'd try just ffdshow + a good media player, or at most the DefilerPak if you need mp4 and ogm container support.

edit: The amount of people still using huge codec packs is ridiculous. Klite sucks IMO since it just isn't necessary. CCCP might be done well but for the most part its not needed for most people. I like the "Ultra Mega Huge codec pack" ones. That's just asking for things to be screwed up bad.
