JVC recorder to computer not working

My brother recently came home and was trying to load a movie from his JVC dv recorder.
the model is GR-D33U (sometimes known as gr-d33us). last year it worked fine, but now it doesnt. The computer can rewind the tape and play it, but it wont extract it. This is running through firewire (USB doesnt work with it)...and...well i dont know what to do.

If anyone has suggestions, i'd appreciate it. I'm also trying to find drivers for it but i cant.
