Sorry. I had a first generation code-free also capable of disabling macrovision that was just cheap and didn't play everything mainstream region one, I subsequently sold it. Last year I bought a CC $40 Apex to give as a present and upon set up, the drawer cover broke off while removing a label, revealing how poorly it was constructed ...It was very embarassing to have gone so cheap on a gift and returned it.

If you're having stellar luck with Apex ...why are you poking open a thread with JVC in the subject header? You can pick up a progressive scan Apex for $40 ...no rebate ...any day of the week.

Thank you very much, OP.

I bought this exact model for my mom from buy.com and paid $20 more. I was also looking for a DVD player to give to a co-worker who has been a tremendous help this year, so now I can rationalize the expense by saying I paid $65 for the first one and $25 for the second (after I send the first one back and order two more from Amazon).

BTW, the reason I bought this model the first time was a glowing review from a certain Consumer magazine that offers unbiased Reports on various products. It's the top-ranked model.

Not to thread crap, but I bought a JVC XV-S500 a year ago. It is progressive scanned also. It played DVD fine.

But I have a lot of SVCD disks that I recored from TV directly. It won't play any of them except a few. It has to get the bit rate just right. Right now, this DVD player is in a box in the storage room

To make the long story short, I tried to exchange with a co-worker for his APEX since his play everything. But he declined.

Anyway, the model I bought has SVCD compatibility on the box. This particular JVC doesn't even say that.

Again, not trying to tell people not to buy this. I am sure it will play DVD fine. If that is all you want to do.

Info on Manufacturer's Site

I believe it is the same model as XV-N40BK but silver instead of black.

Reviews and test results on DVDRHelp.com

For those of you who will use it for MP3s: Earlier JVC DVD players would output MP3 sound only from the regular RCA output jacks and not from the optical output. So, you would have to have a double audio connection from it to your receiver to play DVDs and MP3s.

Another annoyance was the fact that it would play only one subfolder with MP3s at a time. So, if you had MP3s in Artist1, Artist2, Artist3... folders, you would have to restart playback from each folder manually.

The manual for this model

I had an Apex AD-660 and AD-3201 in the past. They were both crap. The AD-660 skipped intermittently. The AD-3201 paused for a second on layer changes. I had accepted both of those things as "normal", but then when I bought a Panasonic and then a JVC after that, I realized glitches are not normal and layer changes should be seamless.

I have a JVC XV-N55SL right now, it plays DVD+R, -R, +RW, VCD, SVCD, and multisession MP3 CD-RW's with no problems. It plays other things like WMA and DVD-RW, but I haven't tried those.

This JVC looks like a good one. I'd pick it up if I needed another DVD player or knew someone that could use one for Christmas.

It changed! I purchased this 2 months ago and was disappointed to see it so cheap yesterday. I don't know if it was a price mistake or just a one day deal. But today it's back up at the price I paid. If you get this for $65 out the door plus the MIR you are lucky. Good luck and congrats if you did. You snooze, you loose :(

I debated it for an hour this morning, but I did get it for $44 AR. :D I had the JVC XV-S65GD up until a few weeks ago and it was an awesome player.

Doesn't surprise me one bit...Amazon loves to play games with pricing. Keep checking back periodically...it may drop again.
