Juststarted need help with sound

I just built a computer with the Asus A7v266-E motherboard with an AMD xp1700 processor. The motherboard as an onboard soundcard with the audio controller chip C-Media-8738. For some reason I get no sound at all. I downloaded the latest driver from Asus and C-media, but it still did not work. Anybody have anyclue on what is going on?

is the onboard sound enabled in the bios?

are the speakers plugged into the "green" port? and also are the speakers amplified?
