The sniping services I have used throw in your maximum bid with a fews seconds left. Ebay will only use enough to win the auction though so you want it to use your maximum.

throws in your maximum, which in turn w/ 3secs left would be "just enough to win"

What are the pros and cons of paying the $5/month to get the better service?

use it. eBays proxy bidding prevents you from bidding any higher than necessary to win.

Unless you use eBay A LOT, that sounds expensive.

AFAIK, the $5 gets you a larger # of bids per week, and I think they bumped the 3sec bid to the pay service ... free is 5secs now? Still always been enough for me to win.

I use the free justsnipe.com service since I only bid on maybe 10 auctions a year.

Out of 20 auctions I've only lost 2 so far, not that bad of a track record.

I use esnipe.com. I don't know if it's any better than the others, but it has some neat features, like you can group auctions together and set it so that as soon as one auction in the group wins, it cancels all subsequent bids.
