I am at UIUC and know several friends who are regular visitors of this site.

SXMP, I noticed in the other thread you gave praise to the network here.
But doesn't it just completely suck? 10mbit ports are soooo slow, the whole
rate limiting crap is just ridiculous. I still remember the beginning of last year
and the horrible memories of not even being able to get dialup speeds.

Overall I would give our network a C or so, but it actually doesn't sound too bad compared to some. I've heard of universities that have a 1 GB limit for the entire week!

As for the reason we have 10 Mbps, it's the wiring. They would have to completely rewire every dorm to get us up to 100 Mbps, and it's totally not worth the cost.

100Mbps? I was thinking gigabit...future investment and all.
I guess I got spoiled with my old school...they have gigabit
ports in the dorms now, but when I was there it was 155
ATM ports. I guess it doesn't matter so much here since
I don't really see all that much being shared out, although
I haven't really looked. It was pretty nice getting files
off my old network at a minimum of 5-6 megs a sec.

Memories...

I'm in Mecanical Engineering and Math at U of I. I'm a junior but, right now, I'm taking a semester off and working for Bosch Automotive. I'm pleased to see there are so many ATOTers from U of I though I'm not really surprised by it. The engineering school sure does raise the nerd quotient. That's why I'm doing Math, too. I don't want to just be seen as some nerdy engineer. ;)

It sounds to me like we'll have to have an ATOT gathering sometime. I'll bring beer.

CWRU doesn't have 8800 people living in their dorm rooms. ;) You have any idea how much money it would cost to get full gigabit switched ports to ~4,000 rooms?? :Q
