just wonder v.s. just wondering

I have a friend who always uses
"I just wonder..."
for example,
[how much this item cost]
[if you can help me with it]

I told her that she should use "I am just wondering" instead of "just wonder" when asking for something; as it is in present progressive.

Any thought?
