Just when I thought my neighbor couldn't be more annoying....

....she hauls off and tops herself. Lucky me. :|

Some of you may recall me ranting in the past about my next door neighbor, her dump of a house, her armpit of a yard (was using two old sinks as water bowls for the dogs recently), and of course her damn dogs. The dogs that are outside 24/7 and have a lovely habit of barking constantly. Adding to this charming habit is that they prefer to do most of their barking in the small bit of her yard that is between our two houses (and right underneath our bedroom window). Since the houses are only about 12 feet apart and made of brick, this amplifies the barking tremendously.

Anyway....I was out late last night and enjoying a nice sleep-in when one of her damn dogs starts barking underneath the window. I look at the clock.....7:34 am. Great. I go to the window, note that she's home (truck in driveway = neighbor is home) and assume she'll shut the dog up, so I go back to bed. Dog continues to bark.....and bark....and bark..... Finally at about 8:30, I've had it. I throw on some clothes and head next door. She answers the door and I ask her to please shut her dog up. She looks at me like I'm crazy. I tell her it's been barking for an hour. She says "I didn't hear anything." As if on cue, the dog starts barking furiously. I cup my hand to my ear and say in my most sarcastic voice "That sounds like a barking dog to me....and it seems to be in your backyard."

She now takes a different tact and says that it's not a big deal for her dog to be barking because, in her words, "I should be awake and out of bed by now."

I inform her that not only is it none of her concern how late I choose to sleep, but that the Dekalb ordinance addressing noisy pets doesn't make any kind of stipulation as to what time of day they can or cannot be noisy. If they're audible within 50 feet, and are constantly making noise (I'd say an hour of barking qualifies) then you're in violation of the code. I inform her of this and say that if she won't shut the dogs up, our next conversation will be with the police and animal control.

She then says that if I call the cops, she'll call the cops about my dogs since they've barked at her on occasion. I laugh and tell her to go right ahead since my dogs are inside 24 hours a day unless I put them out for bathroom duty or I'm out in the yard with them. If they start barking, I immediately shut them up and bring them inside (I'm really anal about this since I actually care about showing some consideration for my neighbors), whereas she'll just let her dogs yap without any attempt to shut them up.....ever.

Attempting to salvage the conversation, I say that I understand her plight with not having anyone around to watch the dogs and that they sometimes have to be out for long periods of time, but request that when she is home, could she please try to keep the dogs quiet. She basically says "no" and that she's under no obligation to do so.

*sigh* So now I have to be a dick and write a letter to her and animal control to get the legal ball rolling so that they can actually enforce the law with regard to her dogs (you have to write the letter before they can really do anything). I hate to do this since I have some empathy as to her leaving the dogs out constantly (she lives alone and works), but if she's not even going to try to shut them up when she's home, then I guess I have no choice. I hate to have such an ugly relationship with my next-door neighbor, but it's either this or never get any sleep thanks to her damn dogs.

Rant over......we now return you to your regularly-scheduled neffing. ;)

Your city sucks. My dad had the same problem and just called the sheriff and they took care of it. Just told the neighbor to get it to stop or they'd take it away.

That way he didn't have to confront them about it, they don't know who complained, etc. That way anyone in the hood can complain without each having to make 5 trips to tell them their dog is bothering them.

That blows. I'd just call animal control and say the dogs were on the loose and don't belong to your neighbor and that they were going to attack some kids earlier in the day.

That sucks man :( Sounds like the only course of action though if they're REALLY bad.

Do you live in Dekalb, IL?

Well, in Dekalb county you have to inform them of the problem with their animal in writing via certified mail that they must sign for. So she'll know full well who's bitching about the dog. Thing is, I won't be the only one writing a letter since several other neighbors have a big problem with the dog barking. One neighbor is 8 month pregnant (so already not getting much sleep) and works nights. She's been kept awake numerous times during the day by the damn thing.

I swear, I just don't know how some people can be so inconsiderate. I'd feel really bad if someone came to my house to complain about something like this, but she just looked annoyed that I was even discussing it with her. :|

They're in a fenced yard, so not a possibility. The really ironic thing is that the dog doing 90% of the barking got out when it was a puppy. Neighbor across the street found it, put it in his yard and called animal control to come get it. I got home, saw the dog, knew it was hers, informed the other neighbor of this, and put the dog back in her yard. I am rewarded for my efforts with an adult dog that barks incessantly and an uncaring owner. Isn't that nice? I wouldn't be typing any of this if I'd just let the damn thing go to the pound. :|

I've seen dog collars that shock the dog when it barks. See one here. I have seen it in action once, and the dog didn't make a sound. The only problem was that there were two dogs in the yard, and only one of the dogs had a barking problem. They only had a collar for the dog that barked. The dog that didn't normally bark learned that if it barked at the collar on the other dog, then he could cause the other dog some pain.

Give the dog a treat....Maybe a McDonads quarter pounder cut up real nice in a bowl and topped with some antifreeze for some sweetness.

my dog figured out that if she layed her head on the ground so the thing was touching the ground she wouldn't get shocked.

:Q Don't feed your dog that garbage.

On the other hand, you could do this every day.. fill it up with a bigmac and fries.. It would probably only live another few years, lol......
