So I got a cold last night :frown: and took some Nyquil :moon: with a rum-n-coke chaser :wine: and saked out. Woke up today with head cold and minor body aches. Got up, showered, and at some chicken noodle soup. Didn't really feel like doing anything at all, but not tired, so I checked my SageTV for movies I recorded that I never watched.
I'm more of an action/sci-fi fan, but I like an occasional suspense/thriller/scary-movie.
First up: The Skeleton Key with Kate Hudson
Pros: Kate is both beautiful and believable in this movie. The back-story with her father made her choices in the story acceptable, and she wasn't the helpless weak damsel so oft depicted in thrillers. The story takes alot of turns but manages to hold my attention without too much wandering/wondeirng. I respect the courage of the story's writer to end the story the way they did. And yes, Kate Hudson gets naked in the movie briefly for those who must know (I'm including this in the pro section because, well, I'm a guy and she's hot!).
Cons: Perhaps the story takes too many turns. Not insomuch that you forget where you are, but that you don't have quite enough time to get an emotional connection to that point in the story. There are some typical elements, like use of the occult, that are a bit overused and at the same time not thoroughly explained. Lastly, while I respect the writer's intent for the ending, I didn't feel any catharsis or ironic pleasure from it, like for example the great ending of The Wicker Man with Nicolas Cage.
Rating: 3.75/5 - definitely worth watching, but probably not keeping
Next up: The Return with Sarah Michelle Gellar
Pros: Sarah plays this mysterious and haunted young woman very well. Much of the story is in Texas, my home state. There are several arcs/timepoints in the story, and the screenplay does a good job of switching between them with ease and with purpose. The cinematography is fantastic, somewhat like The Pulse with Kristen Bell in that it gives that eerie feeling frequently. Sarah has her irrefutable charm as always, but does not use it apart from what is necessary of her character. And the ending, if not somewhat predictable, provides for good closure.
Cons: It's hard to find much wrong with this movie. Some time is wasted on tertiary characters. About 2/3 through the movie you've pretty much figured out everything, which kind of spoils the ending. And like other movies, the ending doesn't provide a glimspe into the future after the story is over.
Rating: 4/5 - good story worth the time it takes to develop, and a possible keeper for those who enjoy thrillers
And Kate vs Sarah? Kate wins the looks category by a point or two, Sarah has the better role and wins with charm and personality (and she's very very cute). Nevertheless, I'm torn about which lady I like better.. guess I'll pick Kate since she is single.
