Wow.

I remembered that it's good, it's definitely in my top 10 movies. It just blows my mind how good it is. There is not a single moment of the movie that's wasted - it all builds toward to climax in measured fashion, and there's so many layers of the movie, so many themes in the movie to explore.

In a word, the movie is dense.

Of course, there are problems with the movie; it's very adult in its theme and skirts very taboo topics, there is a lot of violence and (some) sex in its duration, and god forbid anyone watch the movie with it horrendous dubbing; but going past that, I've yet to see another movie that's as layered, engaging and intelligent as Oldboy. I always pick something up, a subtle nuance in the script or subtle facial expressions I missed the last time, everytime I watch the movie.

Definitely the best of the vengeance trilogy, definitely the best revenge movie, definitely my favorite movie. If you haven't watched the movie and you're okay with not being squeamish, then I'd very highly suggest you watch that movie.

Do you have any movies like that, that you can watch over and over again, and you get something new from it everytime?

It was good, but bit too cartoony for my taste (well it's based on one anyway).

I prefer more realistic serious revenge/redemption flicks like Se7en, Shawshank, City of God, Count of Monte Cristo, etc. A guy locked up for decades eating only dumplings, able to beat up an army of thugs alone, ridiculous hypnotism as a lazy plot device, and he's supposedly same age as the antagonist (hence HS old boys), but the antagonist is youthful at half his age, and so on.

I didn't care for other Vengeance series. Even more cartoony. Old Boy is the best of three.

I liked it too. I planned on reviewing the movie in KT's thread, but some how I couldn't do that. :hmm:

The only problem that I had is that the big "got'cha" moment in the movie was a bit too obvious to me.

You could say the same thing about ATOT's "Best Joke Ever." 😀

BNTL!
