I'm sure he learned his lesson

I don't know, I always loved dancing.... Especially to music.... Anyway, ya, mentats are pretty much the most beastly people ever, I always wondered if the human brain is really capable of doing that, it would be pretty awesome.... Though I don't think I'd care to try it.

People will call you a noob and will insult you for no reason other than the fact that you're new to the board. Don't let it bother you. Develop thick skin when you're on this board. I guess that applies to life too. There are assholes everywhere.

I was VERY surprised when I was allowed to make the name Mentat. It was a shot in the dark when I hit "enter" to see if I would get the name. Low and behold, here I am.

There is a wikipedia entry on Frank Herbert's fictional characters called Mentats if you want to know more. I love the book and will read it about every 5 to 7 years because it is THAT good. If you are interested in a classic Sci-Fi book (that blows LotR's out of the water) then you should read it.

Great forums with great people imo (well for the most part).

The rules arent to hard to follow here, most are common sense. The mods are cool as long as you dont piss them off (i.e adhere to rules).

Welcome! :)

Things that might throw you off:
oldsmoboat law - funny not found (eg. a joke thread where the joke isn't funny)
neffing - refer to the "Do you like pie" comment above.

avatars - All the cool people have the Crab or BlackMan avatar. The US Flag avatar people - avoid them in P&N.

Edit: And yeah, hell, sh!t and fvck isn't considered profanity out here. That whole H-E-double hockey sticks thing you just did - not cool.

> 1: What are acronyms or unspoken rules about posting that i should know.

It's always wise to use intelligent conversations, common sense, kindness and love towards the other members of this community.
ATOT is full of extremely intelligent people which *without an exception* state wise and GOOD opinions - so you would good doing the same.

You cal also show your experience and geekiness in using "geek"-language...eg. "1 @m l33t and 1 l!k3 At0T" or similiar.

This elevates your staus quicker and makes you a (so called) lifer.

Means: You get more girls !

> 2: a. Help my reading speed and amount of material I read per day
> b. Increased typing speed

There is no question ATOT helps the reading-speed. It also boosts every other mental capabilities. On average, ATOT can boost an IQ one or two percent/month.

>c. Exposure to many differing opinions and ideologies which thus increases my "human capital" (amount of knowledge and experience one has in the world)

Fully agree. I came into this world a poor, uneducated kid.
NOW i am a responsible human being with incredible knowledge. Most, if not ALL of it comes directly right off ATOT.

> d. Formulate opinions about many "hot topics" that pop up today as well as staying up to date on all politics that occur

Yes...we have a forum called P/N. There you can always have VERY INTELLIGENT political debates with other forum members.
Actually P/N is the most loved forum here on this site.

> e. Work on my writing ability in general. I don't often have the opportunity to write down ideas rushing around in my head, this is an outlet that allows for such activities.

I am sure you can do it. Once you reach a certain level of proficience in writing and articulating you can defintly try starting a post a topic. Slowly, careful, step-by-step.

> f. Oh yea, i forgot, a major reason why is b/c some of you guys are funny as all H - E - Double hockey sticks (you can't use profanity...correct?)

You are totally right here. No day where i am sad or depressed - and i ONLY need to go on ATOT and i am the happiest man on earth.

The first rule about ATOT is that you can be banned for the most innocent thing while everyone else is getting away with the most outrageous thing.

Hey guys,

I'm new here. My friend has been posting here ever since highschool and I finally decided to give in to his request of "you should JOIN. get on anandtech. Their off topic forums are the best." I can remember him telling me that he posted here in HS asking how to shave his face. I always thought forums were, how shall I say...for those who really like computers a lot. However, I've come to realize forums are for everyone who has internet access. There are tons of very interesting posts on Off Topic that I have enjoyed reading and finally decided to make an account and start posting/replying.

There is one question i want to ask and one comment i would like to make.

1: What are acronyms or unspoken rules about posting that i should know. (ie. I just learned that ATOT means anandtech off topic. Stuff like that. I'm a noob, I admit it, help me out guys)
2: I decided to start up forum'ing due to the several benefits it has (if any of you agree or disagree with me on these, please let me know cuz at this point they are just speculation. To have someone who has posted here for a long time respond to these would be great)
a. Help my reading speed and amount of material I read per day
b. Increased typing speed
c. Exposure to many differing opinions and ideologies which thus increases my "human capital" (amount of knowledge and experience one has in the world)
d. Formulate opinions about many "hot topics" that pop up today as well as staying up to date on all politics that occur

If any of you guys have anything else to add about benefits or anything in general, please do so.
