Went from:

I7 920
12gb mem
560ti 448

to

I5 3570k
8gb Mem (dropped down to 8 for dual channel moving from Tri Channel)
670 2gb

And wow I was not expecting such a performance increase. I tried the 670 on the I7 setup and wasn't too thrilled with the increase in performance. But once I coupled it with the I5 3570k I instantly noticed a huge difference. I'm not sure if it is because of a format or the I7 setup was really just that dated... but wow. I'm half curious how the 560ti 448 would perform on this rig... but I'm not goin back :).

I wanted a 7950 but MicroCenter sold out before I could go... so I treated myself to a MSI Twin Frozr IV 670 and man is this thing ice cold compared to my previous cards! Idles at 28c and tops out at 62c! That's awesome!

Overall happy. I didn't want to blow money on a 670 when I thought the 7950 was a better value, but man I don't regret it now. I likely would have had the same experience with the 7950.

Not to mention we upped my wife from a E7300 & 6870 to the I7 920 & 560ti 448 (she uses her PC way less than I do - she likes her Alienware laptop) and we moved the C2D to the entertainment center for video / internet streams. I also upgrade my network to all gigabit!

Man... best $700 I've spent in a while.

Maybe he doesn't overclocked? Stock 920 is a dog.

You're right. I don't OC.

EDIT:

It's not that I didn't try. It seemed that any OC I tried to apply to the 920 caused problems. I wasn't sure what to set the voltage to and didn't want to ruin it.

Sounds more like there was something wrong with your 920.

Nah. The IPC difference between nehalem and IB/SB is rather huge, I upgraded mine years ago and couldn't believe the difference between that and Sandy Bridge. It was noticeable across the board. Literally everything was snappier and all games ran quite a bit better.

I also oc'ed my old chip to right around 4ghz before upgrading as well.

Congrats. Stock 920 to stock 3570K is a huge jump. About 50% faster. Yeah, you'll feel that! In fact, it's a bigger upgrade than your GPU upgrade.

And just think, there's more on tap - that 3570K will be easy to boost by at least 20% without even thinking.

It also helps that I went from Sata II to Sata III in the transition, unlocking my 500gb SSD's full potential for reading. Not that WEI matters that much, but it went from a 7.4 to a 7.9 with the same drive.

Also transferring files across a network at 90mb/s + is nice. I find that I need to move large stuff more often these days and it is cutting the transfer time by ~9 times.

Welcome to the wonders of a fresh install of Windows.

That is what I tell each time, and people who don't know better never listen.

Going from a first gen to a second gen is a decent performance inc, may or may not feel huge but is worth upgrading. Second gen to third gen is no difference at all. First gen to third gen is probably a bit bigger than the first case.

Long story short. No point having less than a 2500k today. And if you have the budget the 2600k/3770k is a good choice.

I have the budget but the 3570k seemed like plenty. I had no real complaints about the 920, played everything I wanted to with the 560ti 448. But wife could use the upgrade and her PC didn't have gigabit LAN so we just said what the hey and did a big leap instead of small patches that would suit what we wanted.

I'm going from dual 6870s to either a titan if I can find one or 670 4gb SLI (I have 3 monitors that I like to game across) then next is an upgrade from a 950 to a 3770k when I get done paying off my next term of college...

Congrats! :)

I'm making the jump to a Haswell K, if it's around a 15% increase in IPC over Ivy.. So far I'm doing good on the game machine in sig for UT3..

I myself upgraded from 920 to 3570k myself. I couldn't resist the price of this motherboard from Biostar Z77XE3 for $80.00 after rebate. I got a really nice deal on board and cpu, it cost me less than $300.00; i already have 8gb of ram laying arond. When i have time, i'll post some pictures.

I live by a MicroCenter so my damage was around $220 after rebate. Hard to pass up after I found out about it!

Going from a Phenom II 960T @ 4.0Ghz to a 3570K @ 4.8Ghz - The difference wasn't as big as previous upgrades. I think the biggest thing for me in games was the minimum frame-rates. The AMD chip would dip quite a bit in Skyrim, FC3 and GTA 4. Now all of those game play a lot better with consistent frame-rates. For some reason my SSD in this intel build seems a lot quicker as well? The benches were a little slower on the AMD, but not much at all. Maybe the intel Z66 chipset is that much better than the SB750 on the AMD build for SSD's? Or maybe the CPU is that much quicker in day to day tasks?

Not familiar with AMD as much as I am Intel... did you possibly go from SATA II to SATA III?

Also higher minimum frames is a great thing IMO.

Nope - from Sata 3 to Sata 3. I had my latest AMD drivers installed and AHCI enabled too. Just seems much quicker and responsive in installing software and entering programs.

Yes - gaming now is as good as I need it. Loving it!

1,000 posts today - After being on here for almost 12 years, Geesh..
