Was that a cable ISP? That sounds like PPPoE, which would be DSL.
User/Pass was DSL. I've also had the MAC address registered type of DSL.
There's probably a user/pass way to do cable. I don't see why not. Yall can make technology that does 100mb on a 30 year old cable infrastructure but can't figure out how passwords work? Come on now.

There's no need for it on cable. DSL needs it because they decided to create and implement the standard as fast as possible, and reused large chunks of PPP (dial-up) tech as a result. Cable just outright implements Ethernet.

Tomorrow: DOCSIS 4.0 modems are released

*fog horn*

Next standard is actually 3.1

O_O

and as to MAC addresses since the DOCSIS 1.0 standard that BEEN the specification, so when you buy hardware for your cable company [such as a cmts, or equalizer, or forward error correction unit, etc..] that's what it supports, if you want to PAY to have additional features added you can of course do that, but as with any company investors generally call for your head if you develop pointless features.

In most cases it is like thinking that a $10 bill will turn $20 if you switch to a larger valet.
