I called Amex to cancel the dumb Amex Blue card that I never, ever use.

I've been on hold for an hour so far. I guarantee you if I'd called to ask for an increase on my limit, those idiots would be on promptly, but they make it friggin' impossible to cancel. Bastards!

urr.. the same does not hold true for Discover. I called to cancel, and they didn't even try to keep me. the whole process lasted for 15 minutes.

I did not like Discover anyways.

Everytime I had to cancel a card, I just ask to be cancelled, they say OK, I say Thank You, and we hang up.

Send a letter, or just stop using it! Surely after a while of inactivity they'll cancel?

I finally got someone on the phone after 80 minutes. She asked if I minded answering some questions about why I was canceling, and I told her, "Yes, I do mind. If I hadn't just waited almost an hour and a half I would have discussed it with you. Please just cancel the card." She was OK with that. My card is now cut into about 80 pieces in the trash.

I canceled a card the other day. The chick asked me if there was a reason I was canceling that day, and I told her it seemed as good a time as any. She didn't get it. Then she mispronounced my last name. :|

You should always cancel a credit card IN WRITING (read the back of your cc statement).

You do need to pay off the card before you cancel it.

I canceled my blue after they told me that the reason they gave me a $5K credit limit on my AMEX green was because I already had $25K on the blue. I said get rid of the blue and it only took a second or two.

Well, I haven't even seen a Blue statement in years (I never, ever use the card), so I've never heard that. Why would it matter?

How do you word it, and where do you send it? To the same place your payments go, or try and track down a different address for them?

Wouldn't it be just as good to cancel on the phone and specify that you want a letter from them indicating that it has been cancelled?

I did too try to cancal my cards and on my first 2 cards, they talked me out of it which then I stopped trying.
Its actually bad on your credit to close CC accounts.
If you're worry you migh tost the card, just ask them to place a hold on the card indefinately.

How would it do anything bad to your credit report?

I dont think closing cc will do harm to your credit. in fact, it's better for it.

Your credit report takes a hit because you could potentially max out your credit on those cards you don't use.

How would you max them out without using them?

Now I'm just more confused.
